OBITUARY
Barbara Fenton
March 19, 1924 – December 24, 2018
Barbara Fenton passed away in Calgary, Alberta on Monday, December 24, 2018 at the age of 94 years.
Barbara was born in Lincolnshire, England and was raised in Harrogate, Yorkshire, a beautiful city that she always loved. Her parents were Ethel Mary Dove and Bertie Rhodes. She had 3 siblings: Keith, Joan and Averil, of which only Averil remains living. Barb had a happy and adventurous childhood.
During the war, she met the love of her life and her future husband, Canadian soldier, Warren Douglas Fenton. They were married January 21, 1946, and in August of 1946 she immigrated to Canada – a wild and foreign land. She was only 22. She settled in Claresholm, giving birth to her two children, Terry and Averil. In 1954, the family moved to Calgary, where she remained for the rest of her life.
Barbara loved to travel, and most of her travels were to England and Europe, but Maui was by far her favorite. She loved the ocean. It was there that she and Warren purchased a condo, and where they would travel yearly to winter for over 25 years. Barbara was one of the few women of her time that had her own car, which gave her a lot of freedom. She enjoyed many years at the Calgary Winter Club playing tennis and badminton, curling, bowling and swimming. Her greatest passion throughout her life was her music. She was a trained singer and had a very strong soprano voice. There was a time when she had the opportunity and contacts to go to New York City to pursue a career. She had a good chance of success, but she couldn’t leave her baby and husband behind. She still continued to sing as the lead in community theatre, as the head soloist in the church choir, solos on the radio, at weddings and a few funerals (she didn’t like the funerals), and as an active member of the Choral Bells. Barb was still singing and delighting staff and residents at her home up until days before her death. She will always be known for her beautiful voice, her strength of character, her determination, her confidence to stand up for herself and those she loved, her humor, her feistiness, and her signature auburn red hair that was hers from birth to death.
Her husband, Warren, son Terry (Margot), daughter Averil, 5 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren will gather for a private celebration of her life.
