Barbara Ann Hendry (née McConnell)
October 27, 1931 – January 20, 2019
Passed away peacefully at the Queensway Carleton Hospital on Sunday, January 20, 2019 in her 88th year. Predeceased in 2014 by her loving husband Archie. Mother to Sheila, Ian (Marie Fraser) and Brian (Sandi Denison), and proud grandmother of Michael, David, Stephen, Bob, Sable and Mia.
Growing up in Kingston, Ontario, Barbara lost her mother at a young age, an experience that shaped her deep love of family. In her early twenties she met Archie who attended Queen’s University, and in 1952 they married and moved to downtown Ottawa. A few years later they moved to Merivale Gardens in Nepean where Barbara formed many friendships that would last throughout her life. In 1965, the family moved to nearby Grenfell Glen and over the ensuing years Barbara established further strong friendships with countless neighbours. For many years Barbara enjoyed bowling and in later years she had a passion for fitness classes. She will be remembered for her many kind deeds, like knitting sweaters and mitts, baking cookies, and being the “go-to” neighbour if a child had lost their house key or needed help. She was extremely devoted to her children and grandchildren, especially in helping Sheila raise Sable and Bob who were young children when the three moved in with Barbara and Archie in 2003. Barbara was very proud of all her children and grandchildren.
We wish to thank the many friends who provided their support and love to Barbara. We also wish to thank the Home Instead Senior Care caregivers and the staff at the Queensway Carleton Hospital for the care and compassion they provided. Visitation will be held at the Garden Chapel of Tubman s, 3440 Richmond Road, Nepean, (between Bayshore Dr. and Baseline Rd.), on Saturday, January 26th from 2:00 – 5:00 pm and 7:00 – 9:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, to Roger Neilson House would be appreciated.
