Obituary of ANTONIO ARRUDA
Antonio Arruda
November 6, 1934 – January 25, 2019
It is with profound sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend Antonio Arruda on January 25, 2019 at the age of 84.
Antonio was predeceased by his parents, Antonio and Maria De Lurdes Arruda, his brothers Jose, Gil and Simao and his sister Maria Do Carmo. He leaves to mourn his passing the love of his life, his beloved wife Marta. They were married for 54 years and together for 61. He also leaves to mourn his three children Rui (Stefanie), Marta (Terry) and Pedro (Lina) as well as his cherished grandchildren, Jade, Justin, Kaylie and Emily. He also leaves his sisters Gilberta from Portugal and Maria (Joao) Vultao as well as many nieces and nephews and the many friends he made throughout his life.
Dad was born on November 6, 1934 in Sao Miguel, Acores, Portugal. Always looking to provide his family with a better life, he immigrated to Canada in 1971 with his wife and children. He worked in construction when he first arrived in Winnipeg and later worked for Canadian Pacific Railway for 25 years retiring in 1999. Dad was a hardworking man who worked tirelessly to provide for his family. Dad loved to take care of his home and garden, always working to keep it immaculate. Dad also was passionate about soccer and would take in a game whenever he could and would never miss a chance to cheer on his beloved Benfica. Dad also loved spending time with friends and having them over for get-togethers .
Dad was proud of his Portuguese heritage and loved taking part in Portuguese community functions. Dad was happiest when he was surrounded by his family which he adored. He loved to play with his grandchildren. They were the light of his life. He loved to tease us all and laugh and make us laugh. Sad are the hearts that love you, silent the tears that fall, living our lives without you is the hardest part of all. You did so many things for us, your heart was kind and true, and when we needed someone, we could always count on you.
We express our sincere gratitude to the many friends and family who offered their support and those who took the time to visit with Dad during his stay at both River Ridge II Retirement Residence and St. Joseph’s Residence as well as the staff at both of these residences for their compassion and care of our dear Dad. An extra special thank you to Titia Maria and Tio Joao for always looking after Dad when Mom was no longer at home.
Prayer Vigil will be held on Thursday, January 31 at 7:00 pm at Immaculate Conception Parish, 181 Austin Street N. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, February 1 at 10:00 am also at the parish with Father Andre Lico officiating. Interment will follow at Assumption Cemetery, 3990 Portage Avenue.
Forever loved and sadly missed. Descanse en Paz, Querido Pai.
