Geraldine “Gerry”‘s Obituary
WEST, Geraldine Louise “Gerry” ~ Age 90 of Middleton, NS passed away on Thursday, January 24, 2019 in the QEII Infirmary, Halifax. Born in Truro, Nova Scotia on May 11, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Earl and Margaret (Soley) Stillings. She was predeceased by her husband Raymond (Ray) and her sister Josephine. As a young school girl, Gerry had a great occasion as a Girl Guide to travel from Truro to Halifax in 1939 to see King George VI and Queen Elizabeth off on their return voyage to England sharing the concern of many of the tides of war that were fast approaching. Then as a young lady attending Normal School in Truro, she met the love of her life, Raymond at the First Baptist Church of Truro Young People’s Group. Captivated by his beautiful voice and smile, they would be married a couple of years later. After living a few years in the Truro area, the young family moved to the Valley first living in Middleton, then Lawrencetown before moving back to Middleton. She taught in elementary schools in Truro, Bible Hill and Middleton before deciding to become a full time mother. She was involved in the life of her community in many ways including chaperoning numerous events at local schools, serving as a member of the Baptist Ladies Club, the Rosemary Chapter of the I.O.D.E. and the MRHS Band Parent Association. She joked she had fifteen minutes of fame with her Bridge Club friends for driving across the George Washington Bridge in NYC while returning from a holiday in Florida. Travelling was of great enjoyment to Geraldine, highlights included, California, Bermuda, Windsor Castle in England and a trip to Toronto to see the Blue Jays with her daughter Anne, grandchildren Alex and Christine MacKenzie. She recently discovered that she was a descendant of Richard Warren, one of the original passengers on the Mayflower that landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1620. She will be sadly missed by her children, Greg (Ann) West, Sus, N.B., Beth (Donnie) Hyslop, East Kingston, Anne (Barry) MacKenzie, Baxter’s Harbour, Becky (K.D.) West, Halifax, grandchildren, Jonathan, Aaron and their mother Jennifer, Craig, Sean, Alex, Christine and Sarah, great-grandchildren Olivia, Jackson, London, Liv and Lawson. The family would like to extend their thanks to Dr. Paul MacLean, Dr. Violetta Hadlaw, V.O.N., Terri Jamieson, Gordon MacDonald and all her neighbours for their care and compassion shown to our Mom. Cremation has taken place. The funeral will take place 2:00PM Sunday, February 3, 2019 at the Middleton Baptist Church with Rev. Danny Smith officiating. There will be no visitation but a reception will be held following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory may be made to the Grandview Manor Recreation Fund, the Rosa M. Harvey Middleton and Area Library or the Twelve Baskets Food Bank, Nictaux. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main Street Middleton. 902-825-3448.
