Mario Matosevic, long-time resident of Nelson BC passed away peacefully on January 19, 2019 at Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital in the presence of his family.
Mario is survived by his wife Nevia of 61 years, two sons; Walter (Prince George) and John (Nelson), daughter in laws Joanna Smythe and Janice (Martin) Matosevic, and grand children; James, Mieke, Jennifer and Joshua.
Mario is predeceased by his parents Tomo and Ivanka, his sisters; Maria Herak, Pina Matosevic and Julia Radovcic.
Mario was born on July 20, 1934 in Perini, Croatia. He married Nevia (Matosevic) on August 10, 1957 in Pula, Croatia.
After serving in the army Mario, Nevia and son Walter immigrated to Canada in 1959, arriving in Kinnaird BC and then settling in Nelson in 1963.
Mario worked at Kootenay Forest Products and then Canadian Pacific Railway, retiring in 1999. Mario loved gardening and was also an excellent wine-maker winning first prize from the Nelson Italian Canadian Society on four separate occasions. Mario was always there for his family, helping his sons with whatever home or yard projects they had underway. He was very handy, which he put to good use, helping his many friends and always willing to extend a helping hand. Mario and Nevia enjoyed many trips to Croatia visiting extended family.
Mario was active for many years with the Knights of Columbus and the Nelson Italian Canadian Society.
Mario’s kindness, energy and passion left an impression on all who knew him.
Funeral Mass will be held at the Cathedral of Mary Immaculate in Nelson BC, on Thursday, January 24 at 10:30 AM, followed by a reception and then interment at the Nelson Memorial Park Cemetery in the Mausoleum.
A special thank-you to all the nurses and doctors in Nelson and Trail, who helped Mario during his brief illness.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Cathedral of Mary Immaculate or the charity of your choice, in Mario’s name.
