Shirley Haggart
1947-2019
It is with sadness that the family of Aileen
Shirley Haggart announce that Shirley passed away peacefully on
January 13, 2019 at the Aberdeen Hospital after a short
illness.
Shirley
was the cherished sister of Joan Haggart (Winston Hetherington) of
Ottawa; Sandy Haggart (Alma) of Ottawa; Susan Robinson (Stanley) of
Little Harbour; Charles Haggart (Petty) of Toronto; and Ross Haggart
(Diana) of Ottawa; loving aunt to her nieces and nephews, grand-nieces
and grand-nephews: Margo Guerette, Jamie Forsythe, Anne Forsythe,
Blayne Haggart, Jason Haggart, Allison Haggart, Navin Ramrattan, Dylan
Haggart, Meredith Haggart, Kevin Guerette, David Guerette, Aidan
Forsythe, Bronwyn Forsythe, Chelsea Belanger, Daphne Belanger, Olivia
Ramrattan, and Marcus Ramrattan.
Shirley
was predeceased by her parents, Margaret Aileen (Dahr) and James
Garfield Haggart of Black Point, Nova Scotia; her sister, Margaret
Dyane Haggart Ronin (Sebastian) of Burnaby, BC; her brother-in-law,
Bill Forsythe of Ottawa; and her grand-nephew, Thomas Guerette of
Ottawa.
Shirley
was born January 7, 1947 in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia and moved with
her family to Aylmer Quebec in 1955. She graduated with a BA in
Political Science from Dalhousie University. She had a satisfying
career in the Ontario Ministry of Economic Planning.Upon retirement,
she returned to Pictou County to live in Black Point and care for our
mother.
Throughout
her life, Shirley was active in her local community and applied her
time and skills as a volunteer to many worthy causes. She volunteered
at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Toronto for the”
Out of the Cold” program. She was active in the Liberal Party of
Canada. While in Nova Scotia, Shirley made weekly trips to
Halifax to record current news articles, columns and reports for
Voiceprint Canada. She also volunteered for the New Glasgow Music
Festival, the Pictou County Food Bank and the Aberdeen Hospital
Auxiliary. She was a member of St Andrew’s Presbyterian
Church in New Glasgow where she was on the Board of Managers, an
associate member of the Atlantic Mission Society, and editor of the
church newsletter.
The
family sincerely appreciates the kind and excellent care provided to
our sister by Dr. Spencer Barclay over many
years.
Visitation
will be from 2-4 and 7-9 pm, Friday, January 18, at R. H. Porter
Funeral Home, 55 Almont Ave., New Glasgow, NS. Funeral service will be
held at 2 pm Saturday, January 19, at St. Andrew’s
Presbyterian Church, 37 Mountain Rd, New Glasgow, NS. Family flowers
only. Donations in memory of Shirley may be made to
St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 37 Mountain Rd, New
Glasgow, NS, B2H 3W4 or to a charity of your
choice.
