BARNES Jr., William Rolph – Passed away peacefully , comforted by family, at the Sundial Retirement Home in Orillia, at the age of 81, Sunday, October 7, 2018. Bill will be greatly missed by his beloved wife and partner, Gina Barnes. Side by side for 40 years, they shared a love of adventure, travel, people, food and family. Bill will affectionately be remembered and loved by his daughters Lisa and Heather Barnes, Connie and Carla Vivian, and the family of his pre-deceased son Dan Vivian. His 10 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren will fondly remember the many games of air hockey and board games they enjoyed playing with “Grandpa Bill.” He was born in Waterdown, Ontario in 1937, the eldest of four children of William Rolph Barnes, Sr. and Charlotte Innes. Being the big brother to Rennie, Peter, Bruce, Gerry and Margot brought him much pleasure. A love of nature and exploration were nurtured in the comfort and shelter of the country home “Barnesdale” where Bill grew up. He studied Geology at Queen’s University and later completed a Masters in Divinity at Wycliffe College, Toronto. With his curiosity, love of talking, and enthusiasm for learning, he was soon at home in his first teaching job on Bell Island, Newfoundland and then later, in a number of Northern Ontario communities. However, Bill was always striving for new adventures and independence and with his love of the outdoors he and Gina became the proud owners of Stillwater Park and Amethyst Gift Shop, Nipigon, Ontario. A home for nearly thirty years, this 50 acre campground was the backdrop for many mountain hikes, brilliant Lake Superior sunsets and hosting of cross-Canada travellers. Throughout his life Bill was a spiritual person, who loved music and dance, and was an active member of the Westmount United Church, Orillia and Grace United Church, Nipigon communities. He loved a good read with the Bible being his most precious book, and he took great pleasure in sharing his wisdom and insights with family and friends. Bill lived a full and rewarding life always looking to climb the next mountain. He will be sorely missed by his many friends and family. A visitation will be held Friday, October 19th at Mundell Funeral Home between 1-3 pm for family, friends and colleagues. A Memorial Service will follow at 3 pm. Interment will be held on Saturday, October 20th at St. Andrew’s – St. James’ Cemetery, Orillia, Ontario.
