LOUGHEED, WILLIAM (Bill) FRED
Born: June 28, 1941 in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Son of – Elizabeth Marion (Godfrey) Lougheed and William (Al) Alleyne Lougheed.
Bill Lougheed passed away in the afternoon of April 10, 2018. Bill was the loving husband to Una, loving stepfather to Niall and Luke and loving grandfather to Winston and Pierce. To many Bill will be remembered as the talented hockey player who dazzled playing minor hockey in Penticton and the University of Denver. As well as playing hockey Bill earned his honours degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management at the University of Denver.
His most significant contribution was to the hospitality industry in Canada. After spending years solidifying his professional skills at the Sheraton Corporation and Canadian Pacific Hotel’s and Resorts Bill joined Ryerson’s School of Hospitality and Tourism Management as a professor in 1974 where he taught generations of students for 32 years. In the process Bill chaired the department at Ryerson for 5 years and was instrumental in developing the school as one of the best at preparing students for the hospitality industry.
Bill was awarded the Canadian Tourism Silver Medallion from the Government of Canada in 1985 and the Educator Award from the Ontario Hostelry Institute in 1992 among many other honours. Ryerson’s School of Hospitality has an annual award in his name.
Bill also was the proprietor of Lougheed Group a successful management placement company for Hotel and Tourism professionals and served as its President from 1974-2006. Through his years of service he impacted, steered and guided many in the pursuit of their successful careers.
He was kind, he was honourable and he was a cherished friend of many and his loss will be deeply felt through an entire community of people he touched with his generosity of spirit and his never ending energy.
We will all miss him very much.
Memorial Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Mariposa Home Hospice, Orillia in Bill’s name through the Mundell Funeral Home, 79 West St., N., Orillia.
There will be no official service at this time although a celebration of life may take place at a future date.
