Obituary Overview
Violet Daisy Gregg (Chernetsky)
Peacefully and with the comfort and love of her sons by her side, our mother passed away
at Grace Hospital Emergency on September 28, 2018.
Violet is survived by sons Doug and Wesley, sister Bunny Buchan (John) and nieces
Brenda Trach and Barb Malten. She was predeceased by Herbert (Bert) her husband
of 49 years, and her brothers John and William Chernetsky, mother Mary Andrews,
father William Chernetsky and step father Thomas Andrews and so many relatives
and childhood friends.
Mom and Dad met in her home town of Libau, MB and were married in 1950. After a
short stay in Toronto they moved to Boissevein, MB; Dad’s hometown moving again
to reside in Winnipeg in 1954. By the end of 1955 and now a family of 4,
they lived in the North End, West Kildonan and in 1972 a final move to St.
James brought her closer to her mother and sister, a place that mom and dad
would call home and mom would continue living in after dad’s passing in 1999
with the support of her sons. In the last 5 years additional support became
necessary and came by way of daily morning and evening visits from the
wonderful ladies from homecare and afternoon respite care when her sons were
unable to be there for her due to work commitments.
Mom enjoyed and found comfort in the simple things of daily living, assuming the
demands of being a homemaker which is no simple or easy task, including keeping
her home and yard always neat and tidy, and when a break was in order, walks
around the neighborhood a few times a day (summer or winter) “with her walker”
stopping to visit or just chatting with young and old along the way,
establishing and keeping enduring friendships with many of her neighbors. Mom
also kept up with attending church on Sundays, something that was instilled in
her at a young age while on the farm, which she continued until it became
impractical, turning to watching services on the television to fill the gap.
Our mom and dad were parents dedicated to raising their family. Following dad’s
passing we came to learn just how strong and determined she was in many ways
that so often had gone unnoticed. Mom was such a humble and gentle person, she
could be sometimes funny, sometimes serious, but always caring always
interested.
Mom survived numerous health related challenges over her lifetime, each time
recovering able to carry on time and time again. She lived her senior years
with strength and dignity. Sadly and unexpectedly this last challenge in the
evening of September 26 proved to be too much for her to overcome.
For those that knew her, every once in a while, take a moment to remember Violet,
for the beautiful person she was both inside and out.
We would like to thank her family doctor, Dr. Kotcha, all of her home care and
respite attendants, neighbors Kathy Kilberry and Kathy Scott for their
friendship and numerous visits with her at home, Winnipeg Fire and Paramedics
and the Grace Hospital Emergency team for their efforts and care of our mother.
In keeping with Mom’s wishes cremation and burial has taken place, with family and
close friends attending.
In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Winnipeg Humane society or a
charity of your choice.
