Obituary Overview
Vernon Stewart MacKeen
MacKeen, Vernon Stewart
Age 68, Beaver Bank
It is with broken hearts, his family shares the peaceful passing of Vernon, on Sunday, February 25, 2018, at the QEII with his loved ones by his side. Born on May 11, 1949 in Antigonish, N.S., he was the son of the late Sterling and Jean (Stewart) MacKeen. Vernon grew up in Aspen, Guysborough Co. and began his truck driving career at the young age of 17. Driving was his passion, and he drove for various trucking companies over the next 48 years. Vernon’s first priority in life was always his family. In 1974, Vernon married his high school sweetheart, Margaret (MacDonald) MacKeen, and together, they built a life and family that Vernon cherished. He was a very hard worker and took great pride in maintaining his home and property. Vernon’s favourite pastimes were “puttering” in his garages, keeping his tools and machines in pristine condition, fishing, and relaxing in his lawn chair visiting with friends and family. He was a man who could do anything he put his hands to. Vernon will be sadly missed by his beloved wife Margie, daughter Candra, son Kris (Kayla), granddaughters Reese, Raegan and Brynlee, brothers Mel, Jack, Donnie (Laurie), sister Audrey (Kay), and many in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins. Vernon was predeceased by his parents, Sterling and Jean, and sister June. Vernon was a big brother, father figure, and best friend to many. He was a man of honour, strength, wisdom, loyalty, and generosity. Vernon was always willing to lend a hand. His family will always treasure his love of music, sense of humour and playfulness, and the joy he found in “Gramp’s girls.” We would like to thank our family and friends for their support during this difficult time, and extend sincere appreciation to the staff of 5A, 11th floor chemo nurses, and Dr. L Wood, for their compassionate care. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Atlantic Funeral Home, Sackville Drive, Lower Sackville, N.S. A service celebrating Vernon’s life will be held at Knox United Church, 567 Sackville Drive, Lower Sackville, N.S. on Friday March 2, 2018, at 3:00pm, officiated by Rev. Doug Stewart and Rev. Dr. Ross Bartlett. Following the service, a reception will be held in the church hall. Interment at a later date in Oakridge Memorial Gardens, Sackville, N.S. Family flowers only. Donations in Vernon’s memory may be made to the IWK Children’s Hospital or a charity of choice. Online condolences may be submitted to www.atlanticfuneralhomes.com.
