Obituary Overview
Verna Louise Nowicki (nee Pogue)
January 9, 1917 – August 20, 2018
It is with heavy hearts that the family of Verna Nowicki announce the peaceful passing of our mother, mother in-law, grandmother and great grandmother at the age of 101. She will be missed and lovingly remembered by her son Tom (Betty), grandsons Miles (Lizett) and Tyler (Edith) and her great granddaughter Alina.
Verna was born in Calgary, AB and grew up in Crossfield. After completing school she worked in the Crossfield telephone office for a short time and then moved to Saskatoon to attended business school. In 1939, she became employed by the CNR in Saskatoon. She was later transferred to Winnipeg where she met Tony and they were married in 1943. She left the CNR in 1946, but when her children were of school age she rejoined the workforce working at Office Overload and Eaton’s on a part-time basis for many years.
Verna and Tony were long-time members of Charleswood Golf Club. In the winters of the years leading up to and after Tony’s retirement in 1976, Verna, Tony and Connie sailed the Caribbean twice and made many memorable trips to Hawaii with extended visits to Maui.
Verna was able to live in the house that she and Tony moved into in1951 almost until her passing. She was blessed with good health and a sharp mind for most of her 101 years. Verna was a Blue Bomber season ticket holder up to age 96. She enjoyed singing in the Oxford United Church choir for most of the church’s existence and was active in the UCW. Even in her 90s, she enjoyed working on the newspaper’s daily crossword puzzle. In the summers, she enjoyed tending the plants around the yard and working on puzzles in her gazebo.
The family would like to thank the Grace Hospital 5th floor medical staff for the care and compassion shown to Verna during her short stay. We would also like to recognize and thank Verna’s very thoughtful friends and neighbors.
In compliance with Verna’s wishes, a private family gathering will be held at a later date.
Flowers are gratefully declined. Those so wishing may make a donation in Verna’s memory to a charity of their choice.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Verna Louise Nowicki 2018..
