Obituary Overview
Vera Bischler
BISCHLER (nee Salekin), VERA
October 28, 1924 – December 17, 2018
With heavy hearts and a deep sense of loss, the family of Vera Bischler, a much-loved wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother announce her passing. She has been awarded her much-anticipated “wings”.
Vera was born in Altario, Alberta and moved to the farming community of Silvergrove, Saskatchewan with her parents, Tina and James Salekin as a very young child. She, along with her sisters, spent their days working at tasks that would test the backs of strong men doing chores such as stooking wheat sheaves, harnessing horse teams and stacking bales of hay. At 12 years of age, Mom worked as “hired help” for local farmers awhile her dad took her pay check of $5 a month! Ottawa School was Vera’s place of learning and recreation until grade 8. She left to work as a waitress and baker’s helper in Saskatoon where she learned the art of wedding cake décor, thus creating many hundreds of fabulous tiered cakes in the ensuing years. One of her favorite memories was working as a fruit picker in the Okanagan Valley alongside many dearly loved cousins, aunts and uncles.
When a tall young man named August Bischler saw her walking with her sister at the Wynyard ferry picking berries, he said “I am marrying that girl!” He made his dream happen on October 18, 1945. They farmed in Silvergrove District and then Leask until 1963 when they moved to Saskatoon because that was where their three daughters would get “first-class education”.
Mom boarded university students and created everything from bridal gowns to bedspreads from morning until night on her trusty Phaff sewing machine. There are very few Saskatonians who have not had clothing sewn or repaired by our seamstress mother! Her bountiful garden produce was served most generously on the groaning kitchen table to her much blessed family, relatives and friends. She was, in one word, inspirational in everything that she accomplished. Trinity Lutheran Church was her faith home where she worked tirelessly and with joy in service to her Saviour.
She remained in her home following her dear husband August’s passing, serving her community and all those in need until 2007 when health dictated a lifestyle change. She experienced “retirement” at Caleb manor but always managed to be there for anyone who needed her loving interest. Failing health determined that she move to Prairie Springs Care Home where she continued caring for others, staff and residents alike.
She is lovingly remembered and terribly missed by her daughters, Shirley (Jim) Kirstein, Edith (Don) MacAllister and Dixie (Chris) Brann; as well as by her cherished grandchildren, Christy (Stéphann) Stef-Gregoire and Ryan (Ty) Stef; and great-grandchildren, Tina Faucher, Jett Stef and Steele Stef; soulmate sister, Katie Hoehn; and dear brother, Peter Salekin.
She was predeceased by her parents and her sister, Olga; and her loving husband, August. We trust that the richest of Blessings are now hers at the end of a life exceedingly well lived.
A Vigil will be held for Vera from Park Funeral Home on Monday, January 14, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. A private family service will be held on Tuesday, January 15, 2019.
