OBITUARY
Shirley Elizabeth Morton
February 23, 1926 – November 8, 2018
Shirley Elizabeth Morton, age 92 of Halifax, passed away peacefully on Thursday November 8, 2018. She was born in Sydney, Nova Scotia to the late Lena (Hines) Moore and William MacLean Moore on February 23, 1926.
Shirley was educated in Argyle & Central Schools as well at Sydney Academy and graduated from Acadia University with a BA and a diploma in Secretarial Science, where she also met Bruce, the love of her life. After graduating from Acadia, she worked for two years at Imperial Oil before settling down to raise their 4 children together in Halifax‘s West End.
Shirley was an active member of First Baptist Church, Halifax, with the women’s & evening auxiliaries and Mattie Curry Missionary and Craft groups. She was involved in Home & School when the family was younger and for many years volunteered regularly at the IWK Hospital Gift & Coffee Shops as well as the annual Kermess. Shirley played in numerous bridge clubs, loved her Keep Fit classes, swims at the Waegwoltic Club & coffee with the girls – well into her 80’s. Shirley traveled the world with Bruce, but especially enjoyed the annual family summer vacations at White Point Beach with the children, grandchildren & great grandchildren. It was a highlight each year and still carries on to this day. Shirley, Mom, Grams, Nan, Aunt Shirley will be remembered forever for her gentle kindness, sweet laugh and perpetual smile that always lit up a room & so much more.
Shirley was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Bruce Morton and a brother, Clement, in infancy. She is survived by daughters: Janet White, Truro, Judy Morton, Halifax; sons: Bill Morton, David Morton (Susan), both of Halifax; grandchildren: Geoffrey Morton, Halifax, Stephanie Morton (Evan Mosher), Conception Bay South, NL, Cameron White (Laura), Halifax, Natalie White, Halifax and Ted White, Fort MacMurray, AB as well as great-grandchildren: Stella, Carter and Jesse White of Halifax, nephews: Leigh Morton (Sherry), Ontario and Tony Morton (Cynthia), Maryland and her many Hines family relatives.
A heart-felt thank you goes out to the staff at Melville Heights, Halifax, and the staff of Lewis Hall, Dartmouth, for taking exceptionally good care of Mom, making her final days full and comfortable.
Visitation will take place November 15, 2018 from 4 pm to 7 pm at J A Snows Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax and a celebration of her life will take place November 16, 2018 First Baptist Church, 1300 Oxford St, Halifax at 2 pm.
