Sydney Mines
The family of Samuel Roderick Lamey Sr., of Sydney Mines, sadly announce his death at Northside General Hospital on Tuesday, December 11, 2018.
Born in River Denys on November 23, 1921, he was the son of the late John Hugh and Margaret (MacLean) Lamey.
At an early age, Sam moved with his family to Sydney Mines and resided there the rest of his life.
Sam was predeceased by wife, Lucy Marie (nee Doyle), and by his brothers, Bill, Danny, James and Rannie, and sisters, Sadie Mancini and Margaret Clarke.
He is survived by his children, Rosemary Landry (Louis), Samuel, Jr., (Mary MacInnis), Gerald, (Marilyn) and Rannie. He is also survived by grandchildren, Leigh Ann Young, Michael Young, Terri Lynn Young, Allison MacKenzie, Jennifer Tew, Peter Lamey, Daniel Lamey and Jordan Lamey, and great-grandchildren, Finley, Madden, Luca, Jameson, MacLean, Briar, Arden and Eli.
Sam served overseas (North Africa, Italy and North West Europe) with the Carleton and York Regiment during World War II and was a long-time member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch # 8, in Sydney Mines. He was employed during his working career with Canadian National Railways, primarily in North Sydney. Sam took up the fiddle at a young age and pursued his love of Scottish Music, all of his life. He was a member of the Cape Breton Fiddlers Association and was greatly heartened by the revival of the Music that occurred in the 1970s.
Sam had a keen memory and right to the end, could recall people and events that spanned his entire lifetime, as if they had only recently occurred. At various times during his life, Sam enjoyed hunting, camping, fishing, hiking, swimming and watching sports of all types, especially baseball and boxing. When his children were growing up, Sam was the faithful chauffeur to countless hockey games, music lessons and other activities. Sam was an avid gardener both of flowers and vegetables and always maintained a garden, either at home or at the Cabin in Boisdale, where he and his family had many happy memories.
