The family of Robert Anderson is saddened to announce that Dad passed away peacefully on March 8, 2018 at the Summerland Seniors Village surrounded by family.
He was born on June 23, 1923 in Saskatoon, SK to Mabel (nee Jackson) and Alexander Anderson. He was raised on the family farm south of Biggar, SK with his 2 older sisters, Ann and Ethel. He received his elementary education at a country school and then attended Bedford Road Collegiate in Saskatoon for grades 9-12. He was active… Read More » in baseball, football and hockey. He attended the University of Saskatchewan before joining the RCAF. He was very proud to have served with the RAF as a pilot in the Middle East, before becoming the Commanding Officer of a base in Northern Africa. After the war Dad returned to the family farm. In 1946 his parents retired to Victoria and Dad took over the farm. He was a great farmer and was quick to lend a helping hand to any neighbor or friend. In 1948 he married Gladys Newton of Biggar and they continued life on the farm and developed many lifelong friendships. Here they raised their 3 children. In 1964 they moved the farm house to town where they both continued to be involved in the church and the community serving as a town councillor, and through the Elks, the Legion, Mason’s and Eastern Star, just to name a few. He found time to curl and he worked in various jobs through the winter months while continuing to farm in the summer. In 1982 Dad and Mom retired to Penticton. Dad served on the board at the Retirement Center, drove the cancer car and maintained their commitment to the church and community work. Dad continued to curl and took up golfing which he continued to do into his 90’s with his friends at Twin Lakes. Dad always said he lived a full life and looked forward to being reunited with Mom, whom he dearly missed.
Dad is survived by his 3 children, Joan (Rick) Gasior of Summerland, Cathy (Randy) Touet of Saskatoon, and Murray (Brenda) Anderson of Biggar; along with grandchildren, Laurie (Nick), Sherylin (Jen), Heather (Scott), Kurt, Kent (Caitlin), Adam (Crystal), Mark, Garrett (Rebecca), Jodi (Mark), Brock (Daniela), Luke (Josie), and Wade (Arielle); and 10 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his nephews, Robert and Eric; niece Barb and extended family on his side and by many close family members on Mom’s side of the family. Dad was predeceased by his loving wife, Gladys, in 2012. He was also predeceased by his parents, his 2 sisters and their spouses.
The family wishes to thank the Hamlets and Summerland Seniors Village for the care and attention given to Dad over the past 2 years.
A Celebration of Dad’s Life will be held at the Penticton United Church, 696 Main Street on Friday, March 16, at 10 am.
