Rita (Floyd)
Morrison
Rita Morrison, formerly from Ashby, passed away 10 p.m. on
Sunday, October 28, 2018, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital,
Sydney.
Born July 5, 1922, in Sydney, she was the only daughter of
the late Duncan and Christine (MacKinnon) Floyd.
Rita was a member of St. Theresa’s parish, as well
as a 53 year member of the CWL. For many years, she lived in Whitney
Pier and attended Holy Redeemer Church.
Rita was a loving and dedicated mother whose life revolved
around her family. After her husband’s passing in 1970, she
returned to school and received her grade XII high school equivalency
diploma in April 1971. Rita then attended the Cape Breton Business
College, graduating in June 1972. She also received several
certificates in sewing and women’s woodworking, where she
enjoyed refinishing furniture, especially our family piano. Rita
worked for the Sydney Whitney Pier Bus Co., followed by working with
special education children for 19 years at Central School and Whitney
Pier Memorial School. She also enjoyed baking, music, sewing, knitting
and quilting for her family and friends.
Rita was predeceased by her husband, Alexander Angus (1970),
son, Francis Xavier (1971) and brothers, Lawrence and Donnie
Floyd.
She is
survived by one brother, Greg Floyd (Isabel), Halifax; two sons, John
(Brenda), Ontario and Alex (Rosie), Sydney River; two daughters,
Marilyn (Sister M. Alexandra, Sister of St. Francis, Alton, IL, USA)
and Cathy McMullin (Barry), Halifax; and many nieces and nephews. Rita
is also survived by six grandchildren, Shawnda ( Aljosa Žnidaaršič), Kim Morrison,
Nicole (Cordell Smith), Tyler (Alana Muldoon), Amanda (John Eyking)
and Joseph McMullin and eight great-grandchildren, Dana and Margot
Žnidaaršič, Ellie Rose and
Everett Smith, Sloane and Carter Morrison and Jaxson and Bryson
Eyking.
There will be no visitation. A funeral Mass will be
celebrated at St. Theresa’s Church on Friday, November 2 at
11 a.m., with Rev. Dennis Lamey officiating. A luncheon will follow at
St. Theresa’s Hall. Interment in Resurrection
Cemetery.
We would like to thank the fantastic staff of the
MacGillivray Guest Home for their compassionate care over the past
2½ years. We would also like to thank Dr. John Archibald
and the staff of 4B at the Cape Breton Regional
Hospital.
