Richard (Dick) Hudson Rankin
1940-2018
Dick Rankin passed away peacefully surrounded by
family at the Prince County Hospital Wednesday evening (June 20,
2018).In his own words, “he shared quite a run with no
regrets” with his wife of 55 years Sally (Speers). Dick enjoyed a
life as a builder, starting his career in construction with his father
Robert Hudson Rankin, and then working and living all over the
Maritimes. He had a great pride in each of the over hundred buildings
he built, not simply in the bricks and mortar and art of doing it
right, but more importantly what the finished product brought to each
community, whether it was an iconic high-rise in a Halifax or
Fredericton, a school for a new educational system in Guyana, or a
performing arts theatre in his hometown of Summerside. He took great
pleasure in sharing his knowledge and mentoring others in all parts of
his life, whether during his construction days, in work, in his
personal life, and in his volunteer work after retirement with the
Shrine. From a family of story tellers, until the end, he always had
one at the ready, whether to impart a life-lesson or simply to amuse
those around him. We will miss him but his spirit will forever live on
in the things he built and the people he
touched.
Dick is predeceased by his parents Robert Hudson
Rankin, and Mary Lorretta (Ahearn). He is husband to Sally; father to
(Richard) Chris and Jeff; father in law to Laurel (Jardine) and
Shelley (Marshall); brother to Catherine and (Robert) Allan;
“Grampy” to Emily, Kathleen, Andrea, Keagan, and Mary Jean;
and “Uncle Dick” to Thomas, Micheal, Peter and
Katie.
