Life full of Love
Hunt, Rev. Gerald Aubrey
It is with peace in our hearts the family of Rev. Gerald Aubrey Hunt wish to announce that he has taken new residence with his Father in Heaven and with his parents, Rev. Aubrey de Vere Hunt and Enid (nee Newcombe)
and the generations past who predeceased him.
At the same time, he is greatly missed by his loving wife, Kathrine Belle (nee Hawley), children Lloyd (Janice Edey), Daphne, Timothy (Karen Massey) and Andrew, grandsons Samuel (Megan MacDonald), Brennan and
Lydon and great grandchildren Gabrielle and Robert …who look forward to seeing him again someday.
He died peacefully in his sleep under the tender care of health care givers at Gatineau Hospital
A celebration of life will be held on Monday, January 22, 2018 at 2:00 pm, with pre-visit at 1 and followed with a period of fellowship until 5 pm at the Capital Funeral Home & Cemetery, 3700 Prince of Wales
Drive, Ottawa, ON. 613-692-1211. It will be officiated by Rev. Fred Demeray, First Baptist Church, Ottawa.
In keeping with Gerald’s interests, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice such as food banks like the one in Wasaga Beach, special youth missions like The Door in Stayner or to the
special needs of your local church.
Our celebration is about a boy who was born in Vom, Jos Plateau, Nigeria, the son of Sudan Interior Missionaries (SIM) and was known as Bandele to his wonderful Yoruba friends. As was the case of missionary’s school
age children, he took residence at the Gowan’s home in Collingwood. Due to health reasons, his parents left Nigeria, when Gerald was 10 and in his teens they settled in the Toronto area. Following in the footsteps of his father and
grandfather, Rev Harley Coleman Newcombe, he became a Baptist minister, serving at over 20 churches both large and small across Quebec and Ontario before becoming an institutional chaplain for hospitals and prisons in Toronto in the final decade of his career.
Along the way, he developed an interest in
· the great outdoors and Christian camps, being a beloved counsellor at Camps Kwasind and Norland
· art, an artist, painting natural landscape in the Canadian tradition,
· music, both keyboard and vocal, singing with choirs, barbershop groups like the Tri-City Chorus,
· an ecumenical spirit
which led to a number of community wide crusades and mutual support among the
ministerial meetings and activities
· concern for those recovering from substance abuse leading to the forerunner of the small group
for study and edification and community focus organizations
· those on the verge of
suicide, calling back those on the precipice to enjoin life once again
· Bringing the gospel to times of conflict, beginning with his support for and correspondence with Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr and replicated in times when labour disputes and other
issues were crippling local communities.
· Looking at things with a global overview in keeping with his family which has over the last generations
lived in or come from all over the world.
· Spending long hours on the beach with his dear wife, children and grandchildren – these are deeply
etched in all our memories and relived into the next generations.
As a retired clergyman and chaplain in the Baptist tradition, he was strong in beliefs and practices, above all to value everyone regardless of their station in life or any labels that they wore or were placed
on them.
Your thoughts and prayers have been greatly appreciated. They contributed much to the way in which this unfolded in a matter which has been far less difficult and complicated than it might have been and signal a
note of triumph rather than despair. Our special thanks to the staff, friends and neighbours at
Residence de La Gappe who were so helpful during Gerald’s illness and so helpful to Kathrine during this time of mourning.
