Laura peacefully passed at her home in Courtenay, BC on September 11, 2018 with her husband near her side. She was predeceased by her parents, sister and son Tom Carpenter. She is survived by her brother, sister, husband, children, grandchildren, in-laws and many nieces and nephews.
Laura, a loving wife, sister, mother, and grandmother passed the day after her 58thwedding anniversary and on what would have been her mother’s 99th birthday… family first, as always. Laura’s legacy will live on through her family, her children Alexandra Carpenter, Carrie Toal and Sean Toal, and her grandchildren who meant the world to her. Her strength, courage and love of family will carry on in Haley, Kierra and Keenan as they continue to make their “old bird” proud. She wanted to see them graduate and start their lives. She did, and they will always treasure those moments and memories.
Laura was cared for in the most loving and gentle way by her husband, Harry Carpenter. Theirs was a true love story that was 60 years in the making, and anyone who was lucky enough to witness their pure love and respect for each other was inspired and humbled.
Laura opened up her heart and home to many friends that became family. Friends near and far will be left with special memories of Laura to cherish forever.
Laura was born and raised in Kenora, Ontario where she met and married the love of her life, Harry Carpenter. They moved on to Winnipeg, Manitoba where they raised their little family among their loving extended family. In the early 1990’s Harry and Laura moved to Courtenay, “paving the road” for their children to join them and raise-up the next generation. Upon arriving, Laura and Harry embarked upon family businesses. Harry and Tom started Mountain Valley Paving and Laura started Com Court Cleaning & Painting. She took great pride in her business and took exceptional care of her customers. Laura and her mother took many vacations together. They enjoyed their time travelling back and forth from Nanaimo and Victoria. They travelled to Mexico together and spent time travelling and laughing from casino to casino in Canada and the United States. Laura never backed down from a challenge and in 1996 she faced breast cancer head on. She fought it and won. For 22 years she was cancer free. It came calling again this past year. She faced it once again with a brave face but a tired body.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Laura’s life and her love of family from 1-4pm on Sunday September 23, 2018 at the Courtenay Legion (Br.17) 367 Cliffe Avenue in Courtenay, BC. We will play a little Bingo, Rumoli, and eat some perogies while we laugh and celebrate a life well lived.
Harry and family want to sincerely thank the ladies and nurses from Home & Community Care who came to help and care for Laura every day. Thank you to Dr. Bakshi for his time and special care.
