Philip Perley
1935-2018
Philip Joseph Perley of Tobique First Nation passed away peacefully at
the Victoria Glen Manor on March 28, 2018.
Philip was born in Tobique First Nation, NB, on May 28, 1935. He was
the son of the late Peter and Ethel (Morey) Perley. Philip leaves
behind his sister, Reta Gonzales of Aurora, Colorado; his brothers,
Ronald Perley (Isabelle) of Centerville, NB, Francis Perley of Van
Buren, ME; nieces and nephews, John Perley, Lisa Dutcher, Rick Perley,
and Debbie Gonzales.
Philip was predeceased by his parents; his brothers, Donald Perley,
Raymond Perley, John Perley; and his nephew, Robert Gonzales.
After being orphaned at a young age, Philip and his siblings were
brought up by his grandmother in Caribou, Maine. She was a basket
maker who instilled in her grandchildren a sense of hard work and
perseverance. Philip often spoke of his grandmother in high regard and
she strongly influenced his work ethic. Philip was well liked by all
his co-workers; and he had a good sense of humor and liked to tease.
Whenever you were greeted by the words, ‘Hello Beautiful’, you knew
you had a special place in Philip’s heart.
His custodial work at the Converse Shoe Factory in Presque Isle gave
him a deep sense of pride, especially when he could bestow footwear to
friends and their children. Twelve miles a day he would walk to work,
until he could get a car. After that, watch out; he was a road runner.
He loved to hunt. He was generous to others and especially loved the
waitresses at his favorite restaurant, Reno’s, in Caribou. He was such
a regular there they would know his order and have it ready for him as
soon as he walked through the door. This would continue when he moved
home and went to his local favorite Mr. B’s. Philip loved himself a
good cup of coffee, lemon squares and anything chocolate.
Although he had other jobs, he finished his career at the
Wolastoqewiyik Healing Lodge, formerly the Tobique Rehab. Philip
endeared himself to the Staff and they in turn became his surrogate
family. Philip always provided Jos Louis half moons and Vachon flakey
pastries EVERY DAY to the Staff, along with getting all the flyers for
the local businesses. He loved to spoil them, which continued even
after he retired.
Philip spend his remaining years at the Victoria Glen Manor, where he
put his cleaning skills to work. He would polish up the handrails and
foot rails and they were grateful for his contribution. He will be
missed by all!
Funeral arrangements remain to be confirmed and will be announced once
they become available.
