Percy Brennan November 22 2018

It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of Percy Michael Brennan which occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Thursday, November 22nd, 2018. Born 1930, in Saint John, he was the son of the late Herman Percy and Anna Julia (Turbett) Brennan. Percy worked as a Linesman for Civic Hydro for 25 years. He also worked as a bus driver for Anglophone South School District for 15 years. (Bus #11).
Percy was inducted into the Saint John Sports Hall of Fame on May 26th, 1999. Percy grew up around the Saint John forum and hockey was soon in his blood. His 1940’s playing career became time spent as a hockey trainer (Saint John Beavers), local coach and referee. Always supporting local players, Percy became recognized for his referee qualities. As an official, Percy worked over 3000 games. He refereed a three-game (1958) NHL series but remained at home to become the first NBer to officiate international hockey competition. He handled games involving Russia, West Germany, Romania, Finland and Canada; and officiated at the first Winter Games in 1967. Percy was instrumental in organizing and later administering the affairs of the N.B. Hockey Officials Association. Through his efforts, provincial officiating grew to a “professional” level. His regarded position as No.1 provincial referee and long time N.B. Hockey Officials Association President have given him his place in New Brunswick hockey history.
Percy travelled all over the US and Canada. He enjoyed camping at Grand Lake, Old Orchard Beach and St. Andrews. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and friends, trailering, swimming and enjoying the sunshine.
Percy is survived by his loving and devoted wife Pearl (Walton) of 66 years; son Michael (Patti) of Saint John; daughter Carolyn Steeves (Bruce) of Strathmore, Alberta; step sister Mabel Mortimer of Saint John; grandchildren Katie, Amy, Sarah, Christopher, Timothy, Patrick; great grandchildren Juliet and Harrison; as well as several nieces, nephews and friends. Besides his parents, Percy was predeceased by his step sisters Irene Margeson and Bessie Ellis and step brother Clayton Foster.
A special thank you to Dr. Corless, nurses and staff of 5C South and Extra Mural for their kindness and compassion.
Arrangements are under the direction of Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (646-2424). Visitation and service times are pending. We will update the website as soon as details are confirmed.
