1928-2018
Omer Horace Gillis. After a lengthy illness, Omer
Gillis, of New Glasgow, passed away peacefully Sunday, October 7,
2018, at the age of 89. Omer was born Dec. 3, 1928 in Murray River,
PEI, to the late Russell and Vera (Jenkins) Gillis. Initially working
at the Power Plant in Trenton, he spent the majority of his management
career in the Public Service sector, first with the Department of
National Defense in Halifax from 1957-1975 and then Transport Canada
in Moncton, NB from 1975 until his retirement in 1988 After retiring,
Omer and Catherine lived in Charlottetown, PEI for a few years but New
Glasgow beckoned and in 1991, it became home. For many years, Omer was
an active member of the First United Church, Trenton and he was a
founding member of the Pictou County Prostate Cancer Support
Association, as well as a long-time director. Omer is survived by his
2 daughters: Sharon (George) Kenney, Trenton; Nancy (Kevin) Crone,
Edmonton, AB; 4 grandsons: James and Scott Kenney; Colton and Tanner
Crone; he also leaves behind his special friend, Lillian Bryan. Omer
was predeceased by his wife, Catherine (Stevenson); sisters: Ida
Sutherland and Lorraine Waddles. There will be no visitation by
request. A public graveside service will be held at 2 pm Saturday in
Heatherdale Memorial Gardens, with Mr. Fergie MacKay officiating.
Donations in Omer’s memory may be made to the Pictou County
Prostate Cancer Support Association, 316 Hollis St., New Glasgow, NS,
B2H 1P4. Arrangements are under the direction of the R.H. Porter
Funeral Home, New Glasgow.
