Obituary for
Norman Clifford Baird
D.D.S.
Passed away peacefully at the Lord Lansdowne Retirement Residence, Ottawa on Saturday, May 5th, 2018 in his 99th year. He is survived by his wife of 72 years Margaret (nee Fletcher), his children Vicki Taggart (Tom) of Ottawa and Peter (Tessa) of Vancouver. Fondly remembered by five grandchildren, Mark Taggart, Alexandra Taggart (Gordon Cudney), Adam Taggart (Amanda Taggart), Matthew Baird (Lindsay Biggar) and Anna Baird (Andrew Pal) as well as his five great-grandchildren. Predeceased by his parents, David and Mary (Lewis) Baird, eight brothers and sisters and one granddaughter (Caroline Lauren).
Norman practiced dentistry in Ottawa for thirty-two years. Often referred to simply as “the Doc” by multiple generations, he loved the Big Rideau Lake, the Expos and Blue Jays, and Johnny Walker Black Label Scotch! He was an avid skier (well into his eighties), a curler (Granite Club of West Ottawa), golfer (Royal Ottawa Golf Club), sailor and tennis player. He was one of those rare individuals who counted both a “hole-in-one” and an “eight-ender” amongst his sporting accomplishments.
With his beloved wife Margaret, he travelled to the U.K., Mexico, Barbados, Hawaii and Bermuda and for more than thirty years sought refuge from Ottawa winters on the gulf coast of Florida.
Once asked how he would like his final arrangements to be, he replied……“Surprise me”. Cremation has taken place and a private family interment at Beechwood Cemetery, Ottawa is planned. A celebration of his life will be held at a future date.
A special thank you is extended to Dr. Alison Trant (his wonderful and caring family physician for thirty years), to his cardiologist Dr. Rasveg Grewal and to all the caregivers, especially those extraordinary ladies and gentleman from the Lord Lansdowne whose thoughtfulness and many kindnesses are so gratefully remembered by Norman’s family.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Queensway-Carleton Hospital Foundation, Cardiac Pulmonary Department in Norman’s name.
