Obituary for Myrna Barbara Pond
Peacefully and serenely, surrounded by her family and friends, Myrna, born September 19,1943, passed away on April 12, 2018, following a full and abundant life. She is survived by her well-loved husband of 52 years, Rob, and her children Kevin, Dayna (Martin Weiler), and Gregory (Beverly). She will be greatly missed by her grandchildren Jasmine, Connor, Carter, Quinntin, Rialey, and Aleksandra.
Myrna was a graduate of Victoria Hospital School of Nursing (London), Queen’s, B.Sc.N., B.A. and McMaster, M.Sc. A lifelong learner and caregiver, she enjoyed careers in Public Health, Educator, Counsellor, Staff Associate in two United Churches, and Spiritual Direction, in addition to her primary role as wife and mother. The death of her father during WW II when Myrna was still an infant had a major impact on her life, and contributed to her enthusiastic work with immigrants who had been driven from their homelands due to war and a desire to contribute to peaceful initiatives whenever possible.
In recognition of her work with immigrant women, helping them learn English as a Second Language and navigating our health care system, Myrna was nominated as Woman of the Year in the health care field for Hamilton.
Myrna was a spiritual seeker all her life, as well as being creative and artistic. She loved playing piano – if only for her own pleasure – and wrote two books of music for her enjoyment. She participated in writing, poetry and dream groups, sought out many forms of meditative exercises, participated in and led Guided Prayer sessions regularly, found retreats that fed her spirit, and loved numerous programs at, and particularly in the spiritual aura of Five Oaks Centre. In the latter months of her life Myrna spent many days and hours devoted to keeping Five Oaks Centre alive in spirit.
Many thanks for the kind and generous support of many friends, including yoga, skating, tai chi, and swimming connections, and the St. Mark’s community. Friends and family are invited to visit and share anecdotes at St. Mark’s United Church in Dundas on Friday, April 20, between 6:30 and 9:00 pm. A Celebration of Life and reception will be held at the church on Saturday, April 21, beginning at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to Five Oaks Centre or St. Mark’s United Church would be appreciated.
