It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Earl Irwin of Wilkie, Saskatchewan on October 19, 2018 at age of 97 years old. Earl was born on the Irwin family farm by Coldspring Lake near Wilkie on F ebruary 3, 1921, and he spent most of his life living in the area.
Earl attended McConnell School in his early years and was a good young athlete who enjoyed a number of sports, especially horse shoes and hockey. The social hub of the area was Coldspring Lake where Earl said that there would be often three to four thousand people attending their sports days.
Earl was a very proud Veteran. He volunteered to join the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1942 and served with the 443 Porcupine Squadron at Skipton on Swale air base in Northern England. He was an aero engine technician and worked on Halifax and Lancaster Bombers. Many of the people he worked with became lifelong friends.
After World War II, Earl worked with his brother Harry on the family farm and later bought his own farm north of Wilkie.
Earl really enjoyed card playing, square dancing, as well as hunting and fishing in northern Saskatchewan with is nephew Alvin brother Cec and the Shrigley cousins. Earl was proud to tell everybody that he and friend Sophie Wachs won the Saskatchewan Provincial Mixed B Doubles Horseshoes Championship.
Earl is survived by nieces and nephews: Audrey (Rod) Peat, Lee Irwin, Marilyn (Terry) Vaughan, Marlene Irwin and Alvin Irwin. And their families. He was predeceased by his siblings Harry (Margaret) Irwin, Eva(Henry) Baron, Alvin Irwin and Cecil (Lorna) Irwin, nieces and nephews Shirley (Charlie) Porter, Howard ) Linda) Baron and Allen Irwin.
