Minnie Blanche (Beals) Sowerby
1928-2018
Minnie Blanche (Beals) Sowerby 1928-2018, formerly of
Lakeville, Kings County, passed away on Sunday, November 25, 2018 in
the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Middleton, she was a
daughter of the late Leslie and Pearl (Balcom) Beals of Truro. She was
predeceased by a brother, Alan of Belleville; and a sister, Phyllis of
Truro. She obtained her RN, graduating from Moncton Hospital Training
School in 1949. Following post-graduate studies at the Jersey City
Medical Centre, she held supervisory positions in the Operating Room
in Truro and Moncton. She later worked for the Department of Veterans
Affairs in Ottawa and Halifax. She belonged to the Moncton Hospital
School of Nursing Alumnae and was a former member of the Professional
Institute of Canada. Upon retirement, she and her husband, Robert,
built their retirement home abutting Silver Lake in Lakeville and
wintered in Bradenton, Florida, for many years. In Florida, Minnie was
an active member of the Floridana’s Shuffle and
Women’s Groups. As an active member of the Billtown Baptist
Church, she was a member of the choir and belonged to the Jean Rushton
Auxiliary and the Women’s Missionary Society as well as
being an active member and supporter of the Lakeville
Women’s Institute. She was also a former member of Ken-Wo
Golf and Country Club and the Glooscap Curling Club. She is survived
by her husband, Robert; daughter, Deborah (Douglas Owen),
Fall River and a son, David (Colleen), Bonita Springs, Florida;
grandsons, Michael (Kristy Marie), Bonita Springs, Florida and Blake
(HeYan); a great-grandson, Ivan, Nashville. There will be no
visitation, by request. A private family burial will take place in the
Lakeview Cemetery, Lakeville. A celebration of her life, with
reception, will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday November 28, 2018 in
the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, Pastor Chris Johnston
officiating. Family flowers only, by request. Donations in memory may
be made to the Robert Elder Sowerby (1893-1971) Canadian Scholarship
Fund at Gallaudet University or to a charity of choice. Funeral
arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and
Cremation Services, Kentville.
