Death Notice
Mildred Eileen (Higginson) Maclean
8 March 1911 – 9 March 2018
Mildred Maclean died peacefully in her own bed just after sunset on Friday, March 9, one day after celebrating her 107th birthday in her home at Windermere on the Mount in London, Ontario.
Beloved wife for 65 years of the late Alexander Maclean. Predeceased by her younger siblings Lloyd Higginson, Evelyn Guess and H. A. (Bill) Higginson; and her daughter-in-law Heather Maclean.
Cherished mother of Judith, Clifford, and Margo; mother-in-law of Wilson and Gordon. Devoted grandmother of Milisa (Andrew), Kristi, Merewyn (Bill), Scott, James (Larissa), Jonathan (Kim) and Katharine (Josh). Dearest great-grandmother of Taylor, Mackenzie, Ian, Alexandra, Laura, Ashlin, Duncan, Sarah Jane, Kristen, Beckett, Mae and Benjamin. She was an inspiration to her extended family and friends.
Born and brought up in Montreal, she often had extended visits with her Elliot grandparents on their farm near Ormstown, where her grandfather drove the milk cans to the train in a horse-drawn wagon. She was fortunate as a woman to graduate from McGill University in 1932, attributing her life-long interest in the stock market to studying economics with Stephen Leacock. She was proud to be the oldest living graduate of McGill University (1932).
After interning as a dietician at the Royal Victoria Hospital, she taught household science at Montreal West High School. She was forced to resign in 1937 when she married the love of her life, Alex. After her children were all in school, Mildred became a working mother in 1955 after she was recruited to teach first, household science, and then grade six, at Hudson High School. The family moved to the Town of Mount Royal in 1960 and Mildred embraced new volunteer commitments. In 1976, Mildred and Alex moved to London, Ontario, where they made new friends and enjoyed an active retirement with gardening, golf, bridge games, volunteering and travel to many parts of the world. She loved to dance and was never one to miss a party.
Always elegantly dressed, Mildred charmed all she met with her conversational skills, her sense of humour, her optimistic outlook and her wisdom. She made friends easily and kept them, such as the six friends from her grade one class in Montreal West, as well as many of her former students. Her family was always at the centre of her being.
The dedicated care Mildred received from many, including Dr. Jonathan Horne and Beth, as well as Lekhamol, Shawn, Emma and many others at the Mount, enhanced her life.
A service will be held in the Chapel at Windermere on the Mount, 1486 Richmond Street, London, on Saturday, March 17 at 3 pm, with Deacon Jim Panchaud officiating.
Memorial contributions to the Mildred and Alexander Maclean Fund at London Community Foundation will be gratefully acknowledged by the family.
“As long as you are happy, healthy and have people to love, nothing else matters.” Mildred Maclean
