Obituary of Michael Shumik
July 17, 1943 – April 13, 2018
We mournfully announce the passing of Michael Shumik who went to be with his Saviour on April 13th, surrounded by his family, at Points West Hospice in Grande Prairie after a long battle with cancer.
Michael Shumik was born July 17, 1943 in Barrhead, Alberta. The fourth child of Ukrainian immigrants Nellie and Andrew Shumik, who farmed outside Sangudo, Alberta. As a young man, Mike felt led to missionary work and spent most of his life in church service.
From the jungle of Borneo to the cold great white north in Alberta, he devoted his time and resources to serving in the church, children’s Sunday school, and camp programs. He also ministered to those he interacted with during his day job as an Employment Counsellor for Alberta Employment for over 20 years.
Many have fond memories of Mike smiling, singing, and cracking jokes. He was always found helping those around him, giving generously and sharing the message of God’s love.
As a Husband and Father he had a loving and caring soul and will be dearly missed.
Mike leaves behind his wife of 43 years Barbara, sister Mary, children Esther and Daniel, and grandchildren Knight and Genesis, along with many nieces and nephews and other extended family. He is predeceased by his parents Andrew and Nellie, sister Sophie, and brother Bill.
Please join us as family and friends in a Celebration of Life service at Christian Fellowship Assembly (11449 92 Street in Grande Prairie, Alberta) on Saturday, April 21st at 3:00pm with a viewing being held at 2:15pm.
For those who are unable to attend Mike’s service, a recording will be available for viewing at a later date. A link will be provided when the recording is posted for viewing.
