Kenneth Michael MacGillivray
North Sydney
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Kenneth Michael MacGillivray, 73, at home in North Sydney, April 1, 2018.
Born in Halifax, Mike was the son of the late Frederick Joseph and Mary Agnes (Dunford) MacGillivray.
Mike attended school in Halifax and after graduation, began a 47 year career with the Royal Bank of Canada. Mike worked in Nova Scotia in branches in Halifax, Shubenacadie, Pictou, Truro, Dartmouth and Saint John New Brunswick. He finished his career as manager of Middleton, Sydney Mines and Sydney main branch from where he retired. He then began working as a Financial Investment Advisor also for Royal Bank, spending the next five years helping people plan for their retirement.
Mike loved hockey. He played for the Jollimore Jets and the Bay Road Rangers of the Halifax Surburban league. He was captain of his high school team (HWMHS) and brought home their first trophy. Many winters were spent playing Oldtimers hockey for the Valley Applepickers and the Truro Bearcats, including a tournament in Florida.
In retirement Mike, Linda and Sherrie loved R’Ving in eastern Canada and the northern United States. Mike also loved his well-planned trips with his friend Bucky (Jim) on their motorcycles around Nova Scotia, across eastern Canada, visited southern sights and the Grand Canyon and was proud to have slayed the dragon in North Carolina. He was an avid Corvette owner and restorer and was a member of the Corvette Club of Nova Scotia.
Mike and Linda were avid geocache hunters and Pokemon searchers. He enjoyed being a part of the greater Pokemon community and made many friends over the years. Mike will be missed by all who knew him as “Fascache”.
Mike tried to brighten the hearts of those he met. He loved meeting people, nature and caring for animals.
He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Linda (Watkins), his beloved daughter, Sherrie, North Sydney; by his brother Fred (Joanne) MacGillivray, Halifax, sister-in-law, Gloria MacGillivray, Halifax; brother-in-law Ken (Belle) Watkins, Saint John, NB and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Mike was predeceased by his sister Mary and brothers, Joseph and Paul.
There will be no visitation by request. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held in the month of May.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the NS Heart and Stroke Foundation, Canadian Diabetes Association or the Chisholm Foundation for Children.
