Mark was born to Rueben and Florence (Vandergrift) and brother Gary, he married Judy (Cotton) 1968-2015, and spent his entire life in Nelson.
He was a licensed Heavy Duty mechanic for Kokanee Chevron, Nelson Toyota, and Forestry. He spent the last 15 years of his career as Head Ferryman for the Harrop Ferry.
His family years were spent on his hobby farm on Heddle Road and summers on the beach in Balfour.
He spent his retirement building the family cabin at Duncan Lake. He truly enjoyed helping other residents get their cabins set up and hone their outdoors skills.
He lived with his son’s family in Nelson the last 3 years where he and his lapdog prowled the neighbourhood and countryside collecting bouquets and treasures for his granddaughters.
He was an outdoor enthusiast: hunting, fishing, camping, and especially passing on his outdoor knowledge to others. He travelled from Alaska to California to Yellowstone in a motley collection of RV’s, and baked under the Hawaiian sun in his later years.
He could be seen driving his bright red Dodge Challenger right up until weeks before his passing and owned several classic Chevelles and Impalas.
Mark passed away peacefully at his home in Nelson surrounded by family. He had long been afflicted with frontotemporal dementia, and succumbed to aggressive prostate cancer.
He is survived by his daughter Michelle (John) Pynn, her children Zoe and Liam; son Bradley (Lisa), his children Emily and Cecily; ex wife Judy (Cotton); and older brother Gary (Christine).
As per Mark’s request there will not be a formal service but an outdoor celebration of life at a later date. You are invited to leave a personal message of condolence.
