Hinds, Maureen Reta (née Greer)
Maureen Reta Hinds (née Greer), died peacefully on Sunday, October 28, 2018 at the age of 75. While growing up in Ottawa with sisters Mary Ellen and Susan, she acquired the nickname Neenie among close friends and family. Maureen graduated from Carleton University with a Masters degree in English and went on to become a dedicated high school English teacher and mentor to innumerable students.
At Sharbot Lake High School early in her career, she worked in a country setting with cattle eating grass just outside the classroom window. The bulk of her career was spent teaching at Colonel By Secondary School, where she was involved in curriculum development for the International Baccalaureate program. She finished her career teaching at Bell High School.
In retirement, Maureen was a dedicated volunteer, offering her time for many years to the Sage Youth organization at Sir Guy Carleton Secondary School.
In the late 1990s, Maureen discovered Grand Manan Island, in the Bay of Fundy off the southeastern coast of New Brunswick. This was the start of a two-decade love affair with the wildlife, landscape and people of the Island. She was drawn to the Migratory Bird Sanctuary, where, without fail, she took early morning walks every day, fog be damned.
In 1976, Maureen married Arthur Robert Hinds of Ottawa and three years later became the proud mother of Mike Hinds. She was also the loving mother-in-law of Emily Smith and a loving grandmother to Auden Smith-Hinds.
Maureen’s passions included frequenting Le Hibou Coffee House; playing her Yamaha Piano while lamenting that she didn’t sound more like Glenn Gould; all things Shakespeare, especially Richard III; and Stella, her beloved and cherished cat.
Visitation will be held at the Garden Chapel of Tubman s, 3440 Richmond Road, Ottawa, on Friday November 2nd from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. There will be a private burial at Beechwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial can be made to the Ottawa Humane Society or to the Stratford Festival.
