Lindsay (Byers), Mary “Roberta” – Age 88, passed away peacefully June 6, 2018, in Elk Court, Brookfield. Born in Old Barns, she was the youngest child of the late Ruth (McCurdy) and Ed Roach Byers.
Roberta attended school in Truro and went on to Normal College to become a kindergarten teacher. She taught in Bible Hill and Liverpool, then married Arthur Lindsay from Brookfield in 1952. They moved to Sackville, N.B., where Art attended Mount Allison and Roberta worked in the university library. They subsequently lived in Dartmouth, Berwick, Grafton, Truro, Tatamagouche, Wolfville, and Brookfield. Everywhere she lived, she contributed to the church and community in her caring and intelligent way, as a choir member, Brownie leader, Sunday school teacher and superintendent, UCW member and leader, and preschool owner/teacher. She loved music from her early years in Truro; she performed in music festivals, gave voice lessons, and published a history of the Truro Music Festival. When her children were mostly grown, she started working in the Children’s Department of the Colchester Regional Library, becoming renowned for the beautiful puppets and mascots she made for them. She loved all children and was the soul of kindness and patience with everyone. Roberta always saw the glass as half full, and proclaimed herself the “luckiest person in the world”.
She is survived by daughters, Marian, Brookfield; Donna (Peter) Hogan, Wellington; Janet, Brookfield; granddaughters, Kelly Hogan, Moncton; Laurel Hogan, Ottawa; brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Dorothy Lindsay. Roberta was predeceased by her beloved husband, Arthur; brothers, Walter, Gordon; dear sister, Hazel Smith; brother-in-law, Warren Lindsay (Anne); sister-in-law, Marian Parker.
The family offers heartfelt thanks to the staff of Shannex Elk Court for their high standard of care and caring over the past four years.
