Obituary for
Mary Plenert (Friesen)
November 18, 1925 – October 25, 2017
Mary passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of October 25th, at Bethania Personal Care Home, with family by her side in her final hours. Mom was the heart of our family and will be greatly missed!
Mary was born on November 18, 1925 in Gruenfeld, Russia (Ukraine), to Isaac and Helen (Warkentin) Friesen. In 1925 the family immigrated to Canada and lived eight years in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, then homesteaded “up north” in Glenbush, Saskatchewan.
In 1949 she married Henry Plenert of Rabbit Lake, Saskatchewan and they started their life together in Winnipeg. In 1950 they bought their house on William Avenue where they raised their four children, hosted many gatherings for family and friends, and lived for the next 63 years!
Mom’s early working career as a nurse’s aide was a great joy in her life. When she and Dad started their family, Mom became mother and homemaker, but her caring nature continued and extended outward beyond her family. Especially notable were the many years Mom worked in the food program at Arlington Haus seniors’ residence and served the First Mennonite Church via her Morija Circle ladies’ group, always with enjoyment and commitment. Mom’s love of cooking and gardening are more examples of her caring personality. Mom was a warm, welcoming, and good-hearted person for all of her life.
Mary was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Henry. Also by her parents, her sister Katie, and brothers Henry, Ernie and Vern. She is survived by her loving children Ron (Linda), Marilyn (Dave), Arthur (Tracinda), Harold (Heidi); grandchildren Jennifer (David), Kimberly (Jeremy), Erin (Shaka), David, Lisa (Ryan), Tim (Niki); eight great-grandchildren; her sister Helen, and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff at Bethania Personal Care Home for all their care.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 24, 2017 at 11 a.m. at First Mennonite Church, 922 Notre Dame Avenue, Winnipeg.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba or the Canadian Cancer Society – Manitoba Division.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Mary Plenert Friesen 1925 2017.source
