Obituary Overview
Mary “Mae” MacDonald
Long-time Dartmouth resident Mary “Mae” MacDonald, 95, passed away peacefully at home December 2, 2018. Born Mary Jane Chisholm in Long Point, Cape Breton to John Francis and Margaret (MacNeil) Chisholm on December 20, 1922; Mae left the Cape in 1940, but the Cape never left her. Together with her husband, Vincent, they established a legacy strong in family and community service. Mae was a homemaker, proud parent and fixture at countless ball and hockey games throughout the province (and beyond) in support of her children. She was an original member of St. Thomas More Parish, a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, and a Eucharistic Minister. As a member of the Catholic Women’s League for over 60 years, Mae devoted countless hours lending a hand where ever it was needed. Mae was a tireless volunteer for the Canadian Cancer Society, the Nova Scotia Hospital, the Food Bank, Meals on Wheels, and canvassed for numerous other charities. She was a lover of fiddle music and frequently danced the square set with Vince late into the night. Mae enjoyed church lobster dinners, chowder luncheons and a good game of crib. She developed many friendships around playing cards later in life and her “love of the game” is a trait that lives on throughout her family. She will be sadly missed by her five children, Wayne (Judy), Shirley (Alan) Graham, Glenn (Dawn), Terry (Margo Fitzpatrick) – all residents of Dartmouth – and Diane (John MacDonald) of Ottawa, along with her grandchildren, Jeff, Ellen, Drew, Tanner, Gracyn and Ava and great-grandchild, Emma, and sister Augustine (Joe) Riou. She was predeceased by husband, Vincent; grandson, Colin, and siblings, Rita LeBlanc, Bill, Mary Anne McDonald, Frank, and Doreen Hutchings. Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 6, 2018 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main Street, Dartmouth. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, December 7, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Thomas More Roman Catholic Church in Dartmouth; private burial to occur at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice. Online condolences may be sent by visiting www.atlanticfuneralhomes.com. (Dartmouth Chapel)
We’ll miss your sharp wit, your strong heart, and we’ll all be listening to the tunes as you dance with Vince late into the night!
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Mary Mae MacDonald 2018..
