Mary Catherine (O’Toole) Cochrane
Surrounded by family, Mary, 96, passed away peacefully on Christmas morning in Halifax at the Arborstone Enhanced Care facility. Mary was born on July 3rd, 1922, was a lifelong resident of Nova Scotia, and lived her life immersed in the North End community of Halifax. Mary is predeceased by her parents, Larry and Ethel (O’Leary) O’Toole; sister, Marguerite (Dita), brother John (Jack), and husband, John (Frank). Mary is survived by her two children; Carolyn (Howard) and John(Jane)Grandmother to Nicole (Jeff), Bradley (Ashley), and Stephen. A great grandmother to Markee and Morgan. Mary completed her secretarial program after high school and began her career at Red & White Food Stores and retired as an executive assistant for the General Manager, Atlantic Division of Dominion Stores. Mary enjoyed reading, bowling, playing cards, baking, making crafts and knitting. She was an avid swimmer and walker. Mary loved her time at the cottage at Piggott Lake surrounded by family and friends.Mary’s journey through life was accompanied by her loving husband, Frank. The two met when Frank conveniently jumped out of a bush when Mary was driving her bicycle past him. This moment in time became an inflection point that altered Mary’s life forever. Mary and Frank’s love blossomed for 70 years. Mary will now be with Frank in peace. Mary set a standard for how to treat people with compassion, kindness, how to love unconditionally, and she always saw the best in people. Mary showed our family how to love, respect and treat others. We are fortunate to have been blessed with such an amazing role model. She loved her family deeply and being a grandmother brought her great joy. We will miss her but will always be thankful for the richness of life she gave us. The funeral mass will be celebrated in Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta Parish, 6032 Normandy Drive, Halifax on Monday, December 31 at 11 am. interment in Gate if Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville, NS. Our family is indebted to the compassionate staff of Arborstone, whom cared for Mary for the last eight years of her life. We are forever appreciative and express our sincere gratitude – thank you. Donations in Mary’s name can be made to Alzheimer’s Society of Nova Scotia.
