Obituary Overview
In Loving Memory
CALDER, Marguerite Eleanor (née Jarvis)
With the heaviest of hearts we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother on November 4, 2018 at 94 years of age.
Born in Guelph, Ontario, on August 31, 1924, Eleanor Jarvis graduated from Lindsay Collegiate Vocational Institute at 15 and Teacher’s College in Peterborough at 16. She taught 12 students in 8 grades in a 1 room school house before moving to Agincourt to further pursue her teaching career. There she met her future sister-in-law, Winnifred Calder. Winnifred wrote to her brother Edward (Ted) in England during WWII and said, “I have just the girl for you!” Eleanor and Ted Calder married in June 1948 and settled in Toronto. In 1964, the family moved to Soest, Germany where they spent 3 wonderful years touring Europe, while Ted was Inspector of the Canadian Army Schools. In 1967, they moved back to Canada where Eleanor pursued her second successful career as a Real Estate Agent/Manager and Real Estate Broker. In the following years, Eleanor and Ted spent many wonderful years at the Boshkung and Balsam Lake cottages, the Clearwater condo and their houses in Thornhill and Lindsay. Following the death of her husband in 2003, Eleanor moved to Ottawa to be with her children in 2005. Eleanor was an accomplished lawn bowler, bridge and poker player, knitter, curler and crossword enthusiast. She was a strong role model, who generously gave her family the gifts of moral fortitude, unconditional love and guidance, and leaves an enduring legacy of the pioneer spirit – be brave and be strong.
She will be greatly missed by her son Iain (Jane) and daughter, Jane Clark. Lovingly remembered by her grandchildren Bruce (Patricia), Andrew (Christy), James (Jess) Calder, Stephen (Lisa) Clark. Predeceased by her granddaughter Cheryl White (surviving former spouse Jason White and his wife Lauren). Adoring great-grandmother of Logan, Claire, Ethan, Alex, Sam, Asher, Sophie, Carson and Noah. Dearest sister of Jean Connor and predeceased by her brother Gordon Jarvis and her sister Kathryn McCarthy. Aunt to many nieces and nephews. She will be missed by her many friends at the Red Oak Retirement Residence.
