Margaret McKay
Margaret Isobel McKay (nee Michels) passed away on May 29, 2018 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in her 93rd year.
Margaret was born in International Falls, Minnesota and in 1929, she travelled with her mother and two older siblings to join her father who was already in Fort William. She is survived by daughter Catherine (Tom Skene) of Mildmay, Ontario; son Malcolm (Margaret) and their daughters Isobel Jones, Annie McKay and Cecilia McKay, of Calgary, Alberta; daughter Frances McQuiggin (Bill) and their sons Adam and Michael of Southampton, Ontario; son Bruce of Thunder Bay; daughter Elizabeth Hutchison (Harry) of Franklin, Tennessee; sister Anne Bailey (Jack) of Winnipeg, and great-granddaughter Leona McQuiggin.
Predeceased by husband Morris, parents Chris and Frances Michels, sister Frances Morin, brothers Jack Michels and Bob Michels, and granddaughter Megan McQuiggin.
Margaret was a long-time member of St. Paul’s Anglican Church and served as ACW President, was Eucharist Assistant and represented St. Paul’s at the Emergency Shelter for ten years. She was a member of the Lake Superior Chapter, IODE had been Regent, and filled many other executive positions. She drove for Meals on Wheels for more than thirty-five years and volunteered with Mission to Seafarers. Margaret enjoyed doing pottery and water-colour painting and bowling with the Green Acres Ladies League. She spent many enjoyable hours at her cabin in Nolalu, hiking and snowshoeing trails and tending the more than 5,000 trees that she and her husband had planted there. Happiest times for Margaret were the graduations of her five children with post-secondary educations followed by successful careers and rewarding lives.
According to Margaret’s wishes, cremation has taken place. There will be a memorial service at St. Paul’s Anglican Church on Wednesday, June 13, 2018 at 11 a.m. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations in Margaret’s memory may be made to the charity of your choice. Margaret asked that thanks be extended to all those who made her life so happy and fulfilling.
