Death Notice
CHESS, Margaret – Margaret Alice (nee Philpotts) Chess of London, passed away peacefully in her home, in her 90th year. Margaret was born in 1928 in Walkerville, Ontario, the youngest daughter of the late Rev. Archibald and Catherine (nee Lane) Philpotts, she grew-up in Saint John, New Brunswick. In 1946, she married Gordon Chess, and settled in London, where they raised their family and enjoyed 63 years of marriage until his death in 2009.
An avid bridge player, Margaret played in several London bridge clubs. She enjoyed live music and the theatre and was an early supporter of The Stratford Shakespearean and Niagara-on-the-Lake Shaw Festivals. She was also a proud member of the congregation of St. John the Divine Anglican Church in Arva. A generous host, self-taught cook and beloved grandmother, she often opened her home to family, friends and Western University faculty.
Margaret is survived by her children and their spouses; Catherine (Leland) Adams, David (Judy) Chess; son-in-law Peter (Louise) Coumans; grandchildren, Amanda, Evan, Jason, Steven, Andrew, Mark and Brendan; and great-grandchildren, Abby, Alexis, Valerie and Harrison.
In addition to her husband and parents, Margaret is preceded in death by her daughter Laurie Chess-Coumans, brothers Rev Canon Gordon Philpotts and Laurie Philpotts, and sister Eleanor Philpotts Brown.
A private family service will be held at St. John the Divine Anglican Church in Arva. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Western University for the Gordon Chess Scholarship held at Foundation Western or the Brain Tumour Foundation.
