Marcial Umali 2018

Obituary Overview
Marcial Umali
Surrounded by his family, our beloved father and
grandfather Marcial Umali peacefully passed away at the age of 88.
Lolo Marcial is survived by his 9 children Bienvenida
(Nestor), Carlito (Aida), Donardo (Corazon), Enrico (Normita), Florida (Arnel),
Herminio (Mariz), Ismael (Joy), Jasmin (Eric), Kelmer (Grace); 27
grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and siblings Ricardo and Lydia. He was
predeceased by his loving wife of 63 years Gloria Reyes Umali in May, 2016; his
mother Columbia and father Brigido; siblings, Irenea, Maximina, Eulogio,
Alberto, Nestorio, Nazario; and 2 children Arceli (in infancy) and Gilda (in
childhood).
Lolo Marcial was born on July 1st, 1930 in San Agustin,
Santo Tomas, Batangas, Philippines. He married Lola Gloria on March 21st, 1953
and raised 9 children in his hometown. As a couple, Lolo was a hardworking,
industrious fruit farmer while Lola sold their crops at the local market. They
strived to put all their children through school until they immigrated to
Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada on January 11th, 1989. In Winnipeg, Lolo worked as
an afterhours cleaner of local businesses and finally spent his last years
before retirement as a dishwasher, line cook, and busser at Thunderbird
Restaurant.
Lolo Marcial enjoyed simple pleasures like spending the
weekend fishing and barbecuing with his family or sharing a few drinks with
friends and relatives. Lolo loved celebrating his Canada Day birthday roasting
a whole pig on a spit (lechon) at the cabin. He also looked forward to spending
every Saturday evening in his humble home on Boyd Avenue packed with all his
children and grandchildren. Together, Lolo and Lola both had a hand in raising
and taking care of all their grandchildren at one point or another; today these
children range in ages 3-36. When Lolo was younger, his skills as a farmer
showed through his well-tended, fruitful garden in his tiny yard. Yearly, the family
would enjoy Lolo’s squash, beans, tomatoes, and mustard greens (mustasa). His
grandchildren’s favourite dish was his crispy fried chicken, but Lolo was in
fact an amazing cook of truly authentic Filipino dishes. He always enjoyed
being surrounded by family and friends laughing and making jokes with everyone.
Though Lolo was known by all who knew him for his sense of humour, his children
also looked to him for gentle guidance, he always had wise words to pass on. On
numerous trips back home to the Philippines, Lolo found great joy in
reconnecting with loved ones and his old way of life. Lolo will lovingly be
missed and cherished in the hearts of many in Canada, the Philippines, Italy,
the Middle East and Singapore.
The Umali family wishes to extend a sincere, heartfelt
thank you for the exceptional care of Seven Oaks Hospital, specifically the
compassionate staff in Unit 4 on the 5th floor who cared for Lolo in his last
weeks with us.
Lamay will be held at Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main
Street on Saturday, December 29th from 6pm to 12 midnight. Mass will begin at
7:30 pm. Lolo’s final resting place will be in Lolo’s hometown in Batangas,
Philippines.
