Madeline Genevieve Tufts, née Wallace, almost 96 years old, born June 12, 1922 in Maplewood New Brunswick, recently residing at the Redwoods Retirement residence, passed peacefully May 30, 2018, at the Queensway Carleton Hospital.
Madeline’s passions were learning and children which she combined into a long career with the Ottawa Carleton Board of education. In the 1950’s Madeline joined the Carleton Board of Education at Fairfield school quickly advancing to Vice principal and then became the first female principal in the Carleton Board in the 1960’s. Some of her other schools were Henry Munro, Lamira Dow Billings and Greeley. She was revered by her colleagues, worked tirelessly for the Teacher’s Federation of Carleton for which she was awarded their highest honor, the TFC Pin.
Madeline was well qualified for her positions having earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of New Brunswick with first class honors in French literature and Mathematics, winning the Governor General’s Gold medal award in 1942.
Madeline was predeceased by her parents, Murray Miles Wallace and Alice Eliza (Brown), husband William Elmore Tufts, her sons William (Bill) and Murray and her daughter Anne (Kerr) also her sisters Alta and Vivian (Steeves) and her friend John Hodgins.
Madeline is survived by her sister Eileen Wallace, (Fredericton), her daughter-in-law, Jo-Anne Tufts, son-in-law Pierre Kerr, grandsons Jared and Morgan Tufts, Robert Kerr and granddaughter Heather Kerr, great granddaughters Scarlett Frobel-Tufts and Murcedez Frobel-Tufts.
She will be greatly missed by her large extended family of nieces and nephews, Merle, Guy, Robin and Neil Nason and their sister Joyce (Titus), also by Jude and Paul Steeves, Darlene Lutes, Patricia (Hughes), Gordon and Allison Tufts.
Family and friends along with her many former students and teachers may visit at the Pinecrest Visitation Centre, 2500 Baseline Rd., Ottawa Wednesday, June 6th and Thursday, June 7th between 2 and 4 and again between 7 and 9.
A celebration of her life will take place June 8th at 2 o’clock, at the Bromley Road Baptist Church, 1900 Lauder Dr., Ottawa, officiated by Rev. Gerry Cook of Calgary.
A reception will follow in the church hall.
Internment in St. Martins, New Brunswick in the near future.
In memory of Madeline, your support of the Education Foundation of Ottawa or the Salvation Army, would be appreciated, flowers are also welcome.
