Loretta Emma Birch 19212018

Loretta Emma Birch
1921-2018
Surrounded by her loving family, Loretta (Hogan) Birch passed
away peacefully July 23rd, 2018 at the age of 97 at the Dr. Everett
Chalmers Hospital after a very brief illness. Born in Bartholomew
(near Blackville) on January 31, 1921, she was the daughter of the
late James and Margaret (Murray) Hogan.
Moving to Fredericton at the age of 18, Loretta eventually
met and married George (Duke) Deap and supported him in his business
ventures, the Imperial Restaurant and the Castle Bowling Lanes. During
George’s 3 ½ years’ service in Europe
in WW II, Loretta was busy raising their first daughter Donna. When he
returned, they had 2 more children, Barb and Dan. After
George’s death in 1961, she began her 22-year career at NB
Power.
Loretta married Jack Birch in 1968 and together they enjoyed
travel and dancing until he passed away in 1996. She was proud to have
been a volunteer with the St. John Ambulance and was a Life Member of
the Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary.
“Grammy” had a smile that could light up a room and
did just that when in in the company of her friends and family,
especially her grandchildren and great
grandchildren.
She is survived by daughter Barbara Ann Gilliss and her
husband Rich, son Daniel Phillip Deap (Karen Caverhill), all of
Fredericton; five grandsons, Chris Gilliss of Toronto, Jeff Gilliss
(Sarah Jane) and Jason Gilliss (Amber), both of Fredericton, Phillip
Deap (Nicole Plante) and David Deap, both of Calgary and their mother
Alanna Palmer; great-grandchildren Brittany, Jacob, Samuel, Nathan,
and Alex Gilliss; her sister Beatrice Campbell of Summerside PEI and
she will be lovingly remembered by several brothers-in-law,
sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Loretta was predeceased by her
husband George (Duke) Deap; husband John (Jack) Birch; daughter Donna
Mae Deap; six brothers Michael (Vera), John (Greta), Simon (Lillian),
Hubert Hogan, Lawrence and Aloysius, as well as two sisters, Betty
(Holly) Wood and Mary (Stan) Burns.
Loretta’s family wishes to express sincere
appreciation and gratitude for the professional care and support she
received from medical staff at the DECH and numerous other medical
professionals and caregivers during her later years.
At the request of the family, there will be no visitation. A
celebration of life ceremony will be held Friday, July 27th at 12:05
pm at St. Dunstan’s Roman Catholic Church in Fredericton
with Fr. Bill Brennan officiating. A reception will follow at the
Monsignor Boyd Family Center. Interment will be in St.
Anthony’s Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers,
donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke or to a charity of the
donor’s choice.
