Obituary of Lloyd Mitton
Mitton: Lloyd Mitton B.S.A., formerly of Thamesville, passed away peacefully at home in Chatham on Monday, March 26, 2018 in his 100th year. He was born in Thamesville, son of the late Leslie B. Mitton and Vergie I. Graves. Beloved husband of Aileen Morgan Wilson and the late Ina E. Smith (2003). Loving father of Robert and his wife Mimi of California and Donald and his wife Judith of Flesherton. Loving grandfather of 6 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Dear step-father and friend of Dawne and Mervyn Erb, Ross and Beth Gladstone, Norma and Kevin Cooper, Joyce and Gary Crackel, Daryl Wilson, Catherine and Don Scott, Ross Wilson, Noreen Van Waes and special friend Roger Bastien (and the late Richard), Loving grandfather of 17 step-grandchildren and many step-great grandchildren. Kind brother-in-law Marjorie Mitton. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Predeceased by his brother Lorne Mitton, Glenn and Ursula Mitton. Lloyd enrolled at the Ontario Agricultural College, Guelph in September 1938, graduating in May 1942. He enlisted in the Canadian Officers Training Corps in October 1939. Due to a lung infection, his military service was terminated in March 1942. He farmed in Zone for several years with his father and brother Lorne before becoming Manager of The Thamesville District Co-operative in 1951. From 1967, he represented Co-operators Insurance, retiring in 1984. Lloyd was a member of Gregory Drive Alliance Church, Chatham. He was a life member of Gideons International in Canada. As a Gideon, he visited Elementary Schools in Chatham-Kent of some 50 years presenting Youth Testaments to grades 4 and 5. Lloyd had a lifetime interest in supporting Christian friends on the Mission field especially Costa Rica. In 1997, he received his fifty year jewel as a member of the Tecumseh Lodge 245, A.F. & A.M.. Lloyd enjoyed history, leading him to a membership in the Thamesville Historical Society, The Kent Stamp Club and the Kent Genealogical Society. He has written numerous short stories and articles mostly based on his memories of earlier years in the village of Thamesville. In recent years, Lloyd became quite computer literate opening a field of opportunities to write and keep in touch with family and friends. The Mitton family will receive friends at the John C. Badder Funeral Home, 72 Victoria St., Thamesville on Thursday from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM. The funeral service will be held at the Gregory Drive Alliance Church, Chatham on Saturday, March 31, 2018 at 11:00 AM. Interment will be in Mayhew-Mt.Pleasant Cemetery, Thamesville at 3:00 PM.
