June 11, 1930 – December 27, 2018
Lloyd, who also answered to Dad or Papa was a kind and loving family man. He was married to the love of his life, Isabel for more than 60 years. Together, they had four daughters – Catherine Anne (George), Sharon Lynn (John), Janet Elaine and Lori Beth (Jay).
Lloyd was born on Victoria Road in Sydney, Cape Breton. His parents, Heber and Elsie (Woodland) Martin had ten children, Hazel, Amos, Mildred, Marjorie, Elsie, twins Sydney and Maxwell, Lloyd, May and Beryl. All but his youngest sister, Beryl Elkins who resides in Toronto are deceased.
After attending Sydney Academy, Lloyd decided not to follow his father’s footsteps into the Steel plant and moved to Saint John, NB where he began his retail career at Jack’s Menswear. He went on to work for Sears Canada and held a variety of management positions in NB and Ontario during his 33 years with the company. As a part of his career with Sears, he had an opportunity to live and work in a number of different cities including Fredericton, Moncton, Thunder Bay and Ottawa.
Born: June 11, 1930 Death: December 27, 2018
Lloyd met Isabel Stevens on a blind date in Saint John. He couldn’t believe his luck when she said yes, and they began their life together. Their first trip as a married couple was travelling to Sydney, Cape Breton on their honeymoon. Cape Breton Island was always very special to Lloyd and seeing the Canso Causeway, meant he was almost home. Lloyd and his girls crossed over the causeway many times over the years to spend summer vacation on Victoria Road and he often experienced a lump in his throat when it was time to leave the Island.
Papa finally welcomed a boy into the family when his first grandchild was born. He and Isabel have 10 grandchildren – Jason (Erika), Michelle, Justin (Emily), Erica (Lee), Ben, Sean, Rebecca, Morgan, Jacob and David. They also have two great grandchildren – Sawyer and Ava.
Lloyd loved both the Toronto Maple Leaf’s and the Blue Jays. He was an avid golfer and demonstrated a lot of patience when younger family members joined him on the course. Lloyd also loved music and sang in the church choir for most of his life. He was always ready to serve his church in whatever capacity that was needed.
Above all, Lloyd was a family man and has left behind a life time of love and memories for Isabel, his family and friends. We are deeply saddened by his passing and will miss his hugs, smiles, strength, stubbornness and stories. We hope that he will continue to provide us with love and advice from heaven.
Visitation will occur at St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church, 75 Main Street, Fredericton, NB, on December 30th from 2-4:00pm. A celebration of Lloyd’s life will be held on December 31, 2018, at 11:00 am at St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church. Cremation to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church building fund or Meals on Wheels. Personal condolences may be offered through www.yorkfh.com
