OBITUARY
Leonardus Johannas Van Vugt
1 June , 1930 – 15 October , 2018
Leo van Vugt, born June 1, 1930, passed away peacefully with family by his side at Cottonwoods Care Centre on October 15, 2018. Leo was loved everyday and will now be missed everyday by his wife Beverley of 61 years; his children Les, Bonnie (Norm), Heather (Robert), Andrea (Richard) and Mark; grandchildren Jennifer, Danny (Cassy), Natasha, Hailey, Kira and Brady; great grandchildren Grace and “little Leo” who is due to arrive in December. Leo was born in Amsterdam, the fourth of nine children. He was predeceased by his parents Christianus and Arendina, one sister and 4 brothers and is survived by younger brothers Nol, Jos and Gė. At the young age of 15, Leo went to trade school for carpentry and cabinet making. In 1952 at the age of 22, he left Holland on an emigration ship to Halifax. He then traveled across Canada by train and moved to Edmonton for a short time where he was immersed in English. He settled in Whitehorse where he started 918 Construction Ltd. He and Beverley married in 1956. In Whitehorse and many small northern communities, Leo and his partner Bill ran a very successful company and they built schools, libraries, fire halls, churches, apartments and homes. In 1976, Leo and Bev retired to Kelowna. Leo (known to most as Pup) loved his family and the house was busy with children and friends most of whom he fondly called “Pete.” Throughout his years, Leo was an alderman, Rotarian, loved to craft furniture for his family, founded and drove the HandiDART in Kelowna, served as President of the MS Society, golfed passionately, wrote a book and loved to travel in his motor home with Beverley which they were able to do for 35 years. He was always interested in everyone and his smile will forever be missed by all those who loved him. The family would like to thank the caregivers and nurses at Cottonwoods for their wonderful care of Leo. Please join the family in celebration of Leo’s life, Saturday October 27, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. at First Memorial Chapel, 1211 Sutherland Avenue, Kelowna, BC. Reception to follow.
