Leo James Simpson
SIMPSON, Leo James – Passed into rest at Westgate Lodge, Belleville, Ontario on May 3rd, 2018. Born in Limerick, Ireland, in 1932, the second of seven siblings, he is survived by his wife of 54 years., Jacqueline (nee – Murphy), his daughter, Julie, Kieran Simpson of Toronto and Rose Lynch of Tralee, Ireland. He immigrated to Canada in 1952 and became Publicity Manager for Macmillan of Canada. From 1966 to 2013, he pursued a full – time writing career. He was a founding member of the Canadian Writers Union and Writer in Residence at the University of Western Ontario and at the University of Ottawa. In addition to several novels and a book of short stories, he wrote for the CBC, the Globe and Mail and the Toronto Star. His essays and plays have been published in the U.S., Britain and Europe. The Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at St. Michael’s The Archangel Roman Catholic Church on Tuesday, May 8th, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. with visitation at the church one hour before the mass. A Celebration of Leo’s life, and interment will be held at later dates. Leo’s family extend their heartfelt gratitude to the truly wonderful staff at Westgate Lodge for their care and compassion.
