Leo Hynes
1935 – 2018
It is with deep sadness that the family of Leo Hynes announce his passing in Medicine Hat on Wednesday, December 12, 2018, at the age of 83 years. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 51 years, Mary; daughter, Tamiko (Tami) Hynes and grandson, William Grabowski of Toronto, ON; daughter, Jennifer Hynes Mardian (Cory) and grandsons, Nicolas, Luke and Nate Mardian of Medicine Hat as well as well as brothers Peter (Anne) Hynes, Frank (Mary) Hynes, Alfred (Maureen) Hynes and Gilbert (Margaret) Hynes of Newfoundland and Labrador; Leonard Hynes and Juanita Hynes of Medicine Hat, and sister Margaret (Don) Best of Newfoundland and Labrador, and numerous nieces and nephews. Leo is predeceased by his parents Pius and Margaret (nee Hickey) Hynes; two brothers in infancy, John and Thomas as well as a niece, Connie Balaski. Leo was born in Terrenceville on July 12, 1935 and resided there most of his life. In the late 1960’s, he and Mary moved to Toronto but the big city was not for him. He moved to St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador in 2003 and then Medicine Hat, Alberta in 2010. Leo knew the value of a dollar earned and never shied away from a day’s work. As the oldest child in a growing family, he carried water, chopped fire wood and even worked in the small family store. He worked in the woods of central Newfoundland, went out on the fishing draggers on the Grand Banks of Newfoundland, owned and operated a trucking business and worked as a heavy equipment operator in Nanisivik Mine, Canada’s first mine in the Arctic. When the economy collapsed in the 80’s, Leo went to work at CP rail. Leo was not one to spend anything on himself but was always there to help his daughters and always came home with gifts for them, including seal-skin clothed dolls they still treasure. He was very proud of his daughters and grandsons. Leo was known as a strong, decent man blessed with nine lives. He survived polio as a young boy, a near fall in rough seas off a dragger and a car accident with CP rail that would have finished most. He once dug up the septic tank with a pick ax in the middle of a Newfoundland winter. As they say, they don’t make them like this anymore. In retirement, Leo treasured time with his daughters and grandsons, watching hockey and playing the stock market (though truth be told, he would have returned to work in a heartbeat). He will be missed dearly. Those wishing to pay their respects may join Leo’s family at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Saturday, December 15, 2018, between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Memorial gifts may be made in Leo’s memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada at www.heartandstroke.ca.
