PATRICK G. LAWRENCE (LAURIE) KEOUGHAN
Patrick Lawrence (Laurie) Keoughan was born in Chatham, NB on November 24, 1953. The sixth child in a family of seven sons and one daughter, he was the son of the late Patrick and Hilda (Olsen) Keoughan. He attended local schools graduating from Saint Thomas High School in 1971. He obtained a BA and a BEd from Saint Thomas University, and began a 35 year career as a educator. He received an MEd in Special Education from the University of Maine at Orono in Maine and later, a Certificate in Autism Intervention from the University of New Brunswick. Laurie died after a courageous battle with Pancreatic Cancer on September 1, 2018.
Laurie began his teaching career at Chatham Junior High School in the former District 10. His next assignment was at Nelson junior High where, in addition to his teaching duties, he coached the Boys Soccer team and supervised the school’s Drama Club. After completing the Masters degree in Special Education, he worked as a Methods and Resource teacher at James M. Hill Memorial High School and at Dr. Losier Junior High. He returned to the regular classroom to teach English at James M. Hill High School, later accepting appointments as Head of English and Vice Principal at that school.
In 1992 Laurie went on a one year teaching exchange to Bath, England which stretched into ten years. He returned home in 2003, leaving his post as Head of English and Media Studies at the Grange Community School in Bristol, England. Upon his return he was offered a teaching contract in District 16 at Dr. Losier Middle School as a Grade 8 Language Arts Teacher. The following year, he returned to the Special Education field as the District Austism Consultant.
He retired from is position as Superintendent of District 16 in December 2011. During his teaching career, Laurie was very active in his professional organization, serving at various times as school representative, Branch President, Alternate Director and Director of the NBTA. A highlight of his career was his work as the Director Attached to the NBTA Ad Hoc Committee in Integration and the 2011 national recognition for his leadership in Inclusionary Practices
His Time following retirement was devoted to his family, his beloved Springer Spaniels, his love of gardening and to travel, especially Spain.
Laurie is survived by his brothers John, Karsten (Late Wilma), Terry (Ruby), Donnie (Adora), Edward and Kevin as well as sister Karla. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews, Tammy (Eric) Matchett, Cheryl (late Scott) McKay, Bernard, Jason (Stephanie) and Shannon (Carrie). He is also survived by several grand nieces and nephews and many cousins.
Lawrence Keoughan will be resting at Maher’s Funeral Home Miramichi on Monday September 3, 2018 from 2-4 & 7-9 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday September 4, 2018 at 11am from St. Michael’s Basilica with Fr John Keoughan officiating. Interment will be in St Michael’s Cemetery.
