Obituary Overview
Lovingly Remembered
FINLEY, LARRY Brian
December 17, 1945- June 29, 2018
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Larry, beloved father, Papa, brother and husband of 51 years. He passed away in the Foothills Hospital in Calgary after losing his battle with CLL/ Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
Larry will be forever remembered by his loving wife, best friend and business partner Teresa. He is survived by his three sons who refer to him as “Big Lar”: Robin (Anny), Jason (Annie), Cory (Kalia); his precious granddaughters: Georgina (21), Shea (16), Liza Jane (13), Kolby (11) & Kacy (11) and his only grandson and little buddy Cade (4). Papa also has one more grandchild on the way due to arrive in September. He is also survived by his two sisters: Bernice Belbin (Moose Jaw, SK), Muriel (Mimi) Meadows (High River, AB) and his sister-in-law Juanita Finley. Larry will be dearly missed by his three special nieces, Brenda McMorris, Benita Percival and Rhonda Meadows. Larry was more like a big brother than an uncle, as he lived with his sister Mimi’s family for many years. He was loved and will be missed by the Mallett Family, all of his extended families, many wonderful friends and his loyal Finley Inspection Services personnel. He was predeceased by his two brothers: Edward and Jim Finley and his two sisters: Virginia Groeneveld and Olive Kreutzer.
Larry was born on December 17, 1945 to Gladys and Milton Finley in High River, Alberta. He went to school in Blackie, AB. He attended post-secondary at SAIT and met a couple of his life-long friends Ken Weller and Pat George. He then enticed them both to come and work with him at Husky Oil in Lloydminster. This is where he met the future love of his life Teresa Mallett. After a whirl-wind courtship, they married on February 4, 1967. They lived in Lloydminster for 4 more years and then moved back to Larry’s home in Blackie, AB. Larry and Teresa incorporated their business Finley Inspection Services Ltd. in March of 1971. In that same year they welcomed their first son Robin who was born in January 1971. Then, Husky Oil hired Larry back as a consultant and they moved back to Lloydminster. They followed the work around Alberta and then in 1973 bought their first home in Sherwood Park. In Sherwood Park, they welcomed their second son Jason in April 1973 and a few years later in March of 1976 they had their third son Cory. Larry and Teresa and family then moved to Calgary in 1978 to be closer to Larry’s work as the business was starting to expand and he hired more inspectors. Finley Inspection Services Ltd. continued to grow and Larry and Teresa have continued to run their business for the past 47 years up until the day of his passing.
Larry was actively involved with his boys by coaching and managing hockey and volunteering at lacrosse. He enjoyed playing hockey in those years with the Oakridge Old Timers. The Finley family enjoyed their 13 years in the Oakridge area. They then went on to build their dream house in Springbank, where they have resided for 27 years. Larry acted as the general contractor and took great pride in the house he helped create for his family.
Larry and Teresa and family took many great vacations to Hawaii and Mexico as they enjoyed travelling together. Larry loved the family property in Montana where he could relax and drive his side by side. Larry and Teresa also had a place for a number of years in Casa Grande where he would ride his side by side in the Arizona desert for hours.
Larry also enjoyed riding his horse Mickey (Mick) and going on cattle drives and mountain rides in his younger years. Larry loved being a Papa to all of his grandchildren. He enjoyed watching their various activities over the years, especially lacrosse.
The family would like to thank the care and compassion that was given to Larry these last few years by Dr. Caroline Owen and Nurse Nicole.
Larry was a man known for his strength, integrity and honesty. His family meant the world to him and he will be forever loved and missed.
A Celebration of Larry’s Life will be held on Saturday, July 7, 2018 at the Eden Brook Funeral Home (17 Ave SW and Lower Springbank Rd) at 2:00 p.m.
