Kristine Stefania Stamm
Peacefully, on Wednesday, December 19 at the Fred Douglas Lodge, Kristine Stamm aged 91 years, formerly of Selkirk, MB, passed away.
Born in St. Vital March 15, 1927 to August and Alice (Duncan) Vopni. She loved school and encouraged education to her kids. She took Grade 10 by correspondence. Some of her character developed in Eriksdale. Growing a big garden so you have good food for the winter, getting wood stock-piled for cooking and heating, walking for miles to get to town, or a dance, visit friends. If you timed it right you could get a ride on the ‘jigger’ as it went by on the rail tracks. Hard work and long hours didn’t faze a lot people of her generation.
Kristine married George Stamm, May 24th, 1947. They worked their farm in Eriksdale until moving to Selkirk in 1955 for a better life and education for their kids.
Kris is predeceased by her loving husband, George (1993), parents: Gus and Alice Vopni, parents-in-law: Charles and Agnes; siblings Kae (Axel Landin), Thora (Ron Proctor), Mary (in infancy), Duncan (Florence McDougall), Bill (Joan) and Art (Helen); two sons-in-law Stewart Clouston and Leonard Railton and great-grand-daughter Jayden Brydges.
Survived by brother Rev. Canon Roy (Ferne) of Kingston, Ontario; children David (Lynn), Larry (Elsie), Gus (Lori), Donna Clouston, Carole Railton; grandchildren Len, Donna (Cory), Rick (Janice), Carli (Dan), Brett, Caleigh, Melissa (Wayne), Mitchell (Jessica), Tyler (Jane) and great-grandchildren Valerie, Cameron, Katie, Hunter, Michael, Ashton, Greyson and Kaiver; many nieces and nephews she thought of often.
Mum loved us all and loved seeing and hearing about everyone’s accomplishments. Her place always had pictures of us all that she liked looking at. Her favourite picture was Dad on their wedding day.
Mum’s work consisted of looking after us until we were such an age that she started working out of the home. Work places included Electro-Knit, Dinette, RCA, and then many years at Mcleod’s. She participated in A.N.A.F. Ladies Auxillary raising money for the A.N.A.F. sponsored activities and the Royal Canadian Legion. Many Saturday nights were date nights to go dancing at the club (after Dad’s sister Iris and Mum showed Dad how to dance the two-step). As kids, we grew up in the security of a loving family which also included grand-parents, aunts, uncles, and cousins and terrific neighbours.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 22, 2018 (today) at 2:00 p.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Selkirk, MB, with the Ven. Gofrey Mawejje officiating.
If you so wish, charities that Mum supported were: Lung Association, Arthritis Society.
Our family’s sincere thanks and appreciation to Willow Unit at Fred Douglas Lodge on Burrows Avenue who treat everyone like family and help your loved one feel welcome, safe and happy. Our thanks to everyone.
Condolences, pictures and videos may be left on her tribute wall at www.gilbartfuneralhome.com
