Obituary Overview
Forever In Our Hearts
HUTCHINSON, Kenneth Hewitson (AAA, FRAIC)
February 24, 1944 – April 14, 2018
It is with deep sadness that the family announces the peaceful passing of Ken Hutchinson in Calgary at the age of 74 years. Ken was a man of passion – he followed his dreams and encouraged everyone around him to do the same. He was dedicated to his family, was an inspiration to his children and many others, and lived with a sense of cause and loyalty in both his personal and professional life. He found joy in painting, sailing, music of all kinds and vintage cars, especially his 1966 Mustang convertible.
He is survived by his wife Janny, his daughter Keesa, son-in-law David and grand-daughters Kyra and Leia, his son Kodi and daughter-in-law Stephanie and new grand-daughter Avery, his brother Ralph and his wife Janet, and his sister Wendy and her husband Ron, many nephews and nieces and extended family. Ken was pre-deceased by his parents Kenneth and Marion, and sister Marilyn Tinis.
One of Western Canada’s most prominent architects, Ken contributed to the cultural landscape of the region, designing numerous iconic buildings such as the innovative Westside Recreation Centre, the Calgary Real Estate Board headquarters, the beautiful MacKenzie Towne Fire Hall, and the project closest to his heart, the Hobbema Healing Lodge (PêSâkâstêw Centre). He was a Paul Harris Fellow, Past-President and Lifetime Member of the Alberta Association of Architects (AAA) and was inducted into the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) in 2010. He had the uncanny ability to bring stakeholders of all sides together to create buildings that combined both art and function.
He was also an avid member of the Rotary Clubs of Calgary and Cochrane, and founding member of the Cochrane Classics Car Club, having volunteered countless hours over the years. He was a staunch defender of the rights of the marginalized.
Ken will be remembered not only for his exceptional professional contributions that have impacted so many lives, but also his unending sense of humour and ‘glass half full’ outlook on life.
